1GB MP3 player that works w/ Windows 98?
Posted by gamefan72@aol.com on April 10th, 2006

Hello. I was just wondering if anybody knows of a personal MP3 player
that works with regular old Windows 98 that has at least 1GB of
(preferably built-in) storage? I ordered one online the other week only
to find out after I received it that it would only work with Windows
2000. No driver or anything to get 98 to recognize it. Had to get a
refund. Then, went to Circuit City and asked the question I'm asking
here now and the young man helping me out said all the ones they sell
only work with Win 2000. He said it had something to do with the port.
I really don't understand this stuff. I bought my wife one about a year
ago that works with 98, but the built in storage was very small and I
think the highest external storage you can go up to is 512MB. The
reason I want at least 1GB is because I want to start listening to my
favorite 3 hour radio program on MP3 (they let you download the show to
MP3 format, including archives) and I want to be able to put like a
week's worth of shows on there at a time. It would be too much of a
pain to erase and download one show daily. Thank you!

built-in storage? I also record a radio show but I put it onto SD-cards.
That way I can listen to it either on my mp3 player that takes sd-cards or
my iPaq or my PC or my laptop whichever happens to be more convenient. It's
far easier to pop an SD-card in and out than transfer files to various
machines or always rely on your mp3 player alone. Obviously, as long as you
have a card reader that will work on WIN98 - common enough - you are all
set.

Another possibility is to shrink your files. If you are recording talk
radio, you can get by with a low mp3 bit rate that should allow you to fit a
lot in a small space. The show I record winds up taking about 10 MB per
hour. There are programs that will shrink your mp3's fairly easily - I have
used the free version of switch http://nch.com.au/switch/index.html

Hello. I was just wondering if anybody knows of a personal MP3 player
that works with regular old Windows 98 that has at least 1GB of

My daughter and I each have Lexar Jumpgear MP3 player that uses Jumpgear
Sport USB memory key drive- which now go up to at least 1 gig. Below is link
to Cnet
user reviews:
http://reviews.cnet.com/Lexar_JumpGe...9.html?tag=sub

They have them at tigerdirect.com for $40 including 128 meg key. (1 gig
Jumpdrive Sport USB drives go for @ $50 after rebate) Plays MP3 and WMA, you
load songs onto key on computer, power is 2 AAA.

Sound is good, navigation is not as nice as on fancier players. Not as tiny
as a lot of flash players, but appears quite rugged. To work with Win 98 you
download driver for key drive from lexar.com.

Hi

I had the same problem! I bought a player at Argos UK which said it worked with
W98 and it didn't.Of course they have a policy of non return on Mp3 players.

I found a site called advance mp3 and picked a player and wrote to them for
confirmation that it would work. They replied immediately yes and I bought a
512mb 'pebble', they do a 1GB as well.

Its brilliant.Sound is loud and crystal clear.Though I bought a better
headphones.Has drivers for 98 and music software which I dont use as it drag
and drops perfectly!

see:http://www.advancedmp3players.co.uk/...1d7d0&x=2&y=10

or choose another!

Big thanks to iws, Hu Ru, and 98 Man for the great suggestions! All
very helpful & I will definitely take them all into consideration
before making my final decision on a player. I just found out that 1
show of my favorite radio program is approx 50MB. So, I could probably
fit a whole week on a 256MB player. That's better than I originally
thought. Would be nice to have at least 500MB just to have extra space
for music. Now, I just have to get past one other little problem ...
downloading one 3 hour show takes about 3-4 hours on my 56K dialup!
Yup, Windows 98, 56K dialup, etc. .....I got away with this stuff for a
long time, but now its catching up with me. I'm almost going to be
forced into some major upgrades in the near future.

Anyway, thanks again!
