CD Burner... master or slave
Posted by Dave G on February 4th, 2004

Hi group...

Quick question for you

If I'm burning MP3's should it make any difference to quality if my burner
is the master drive (on a shared IDE channel with a slave dvd-rom drive) or
whether it is the slave (on a shared IDE channel with a master dvd-rom
drive).

Assume that all jumper settings are correct for each drive and that they
are in the correct positions along the cable in each of the scenarios above

Whaddya think

Regards

The only reason I could see that would make that an issue is using
both drives at the same time, regardless of which one was the master.
I use my DVD-ROM as a master and my CD-RW as its slave, and have never
had any hint of a problem.

I just happened to be in the right place at the right time to see what
Joel wrote in alt.music.mp3 and:

It seems to make a difference to my set up... previously my Samsung burner
was the slave and all MP3 CD's burned with lots of drop outs... even at
lower write speeds

As master it seems to be able to burn them perfectly... and at higher
speeds.

Media from the same batch was used, same tracks burned, same Nero settings,
same write speed and so on

Hmmmm

Might be a problem with the IDE controller itself. I happen to have a
Samsung burner (SW-240B), too, and in over a year it has yet to ruin a
disc, always having been a slave to my DVD-ROM.

I just happened to be in the right place at the right time to see what
Joel wrote in alt.music.mp3 and:

I've now tried it as master in three systems... works great... however,
run it as a slave and non of the systems like it although there does
seem to be a difference in the qty of errors burned by each system when
it is set as slave...

And man am I going through some discs...

Time to stop methinks... and leave it as a master drive

Thanks for the response

Hi Dave,
A rule of thumb in the computer world is to configure the device that needs
the fastest access as the master. In other words, make the CD burner the
master and the DVD-Rom the slave.

Different burners require different settings. Go to the MFG web site fo
YOUR burner, YOUR model, etc., and find out if they make theirs to wor
better as a slave drive or a master drive. The is NO one answer for al
the different brands of burners

Hope this info is of some help??
