Connecting MP3 player to car audio system???
Posted by ront2 on January 13th, 2008

Am about to purchase my first MP3 player - Creative Labs Zen 8GB.
Is there a way to use this player and have music come out of car radio
speakers?
Jacks of some type??
Thanks, Ron (ront2@cox.net)

depends on the car radio............and maybe the mp3 player.

though the later will almost always have a 3mm jack port as the output.

is your radio a cd/dvd player or cassette,

if cd then you can buy an FM transmitter for the MP3 player.

if cassette you can buy adapters, a 3mm jack to dummy cassette case type.

also if you get an iPod then radios are now available with a direct ipod
connector fitting.

so there are a few options.

Ron,

Most people use an FM transmitter. Go to Amazon and search on FM
transmitter. You'll get a bunch of hits. I went to my local Walmart and
bought a new Belkin Tunecast II - $20. The performance was not that great in
the car, so I performed the mod on the below page. Just doing the antenna
wire mod really helped, but you have to be handy with a soldering iron! It
also comes with a cigarette lighter adapter so you can save on batteries.
Also I found that these transmitters seem to perform best high in the band,
say 103 Mhz and above. Here in the Philly suburbs 103.5 seems best. Good
luck.

The Belkin looks good, but at $80+ that's the same price as the Sony car
radio I just put in the wife's car. It has cd and an auxiliary input
jack. So give some thought to upgrading the car radio unless your
current radio has cassette input in which case a cassette adapter will work.

Depends also on your car audio. I have a Volvo S80 which had the option of a
CD auto-changer. I was able to buy a unit which plugged into my car system
and simulated the auto-changer, allowing a lead which could plug directly
into the MP3 player. Look on the internet eg. forums for your car model, to
see if such a unit exists.
