deleted ID-Tags
Posted by dummy_1943@gmx.net on May 31st, 2006

Hi there,

I´ve wondered, if there´s a possibility to restore deleted ID-Tags,
when the files have already been copied.
That means - the tags couldn´t be restored from disk, ´cause the
medium changed!!

Is there something like a backup of the meta-data within the mp3s ?

Hopefully anyone could help me out..

Best wishes

Jo

Mp3 files may have 2 ID tags: ID3v1 (128B fixed length) and ID3v2.
If your mp3 files had both tags and you deleted only one of them, the other could be used
to rebuild the deleted one to a certain extent. That's the closest to a backup you'll
get.

it's a tedious task if you have more than a few.
Real player seems to be pretty good, you can just tab between fields
when in library view.

I use Tag&Rename when there are many files to be tagged. It can synchronize ID3v1 and v2
tags with the option of not overwriting existing fields, plus it has the usual tagging
functions such as build tag fields from filename, freedb lookup, etc.
When I need to tag only a few files, WinAmp works just fine.

then you could re-tag them from the filenames. You might not get all the
data back, but at least 'artist - trackname' is better than nothing. If
you have other data in the filenames you should be able to restore that too.

Various mp3 batch-taggers will do this.
