EAC and unpredictable errors
Posted by Derek on March 3rd, 2004

This is not exactly an MP3 question so forgive me if it's
off-topic, but I'm ripping my CDs with EAC in preparation for
MP3 conversion and I'm seeing some strange behavior. I'd post
in the EAC forums, but the site seems to be down.

I noticed that in secure mode EAC sometimes rips through a
heavily scratched CD pretty fast (8x) and other times a CD
with only a few minor scratches (or even none at all) will
grind it to 1-2x or even slower.

(I've even had brand news CDs straight from the store that EAC
could not rip at all! In those few cases I exchanged the disc
and the new copy ripped without incident.)

What surprised me recently is that EAC tore through a
*heavily* scratched CD at 9x and reported 100% as the track
quality for *every* track. I haven't had time to listen to
the whole CD, but it seems to have ripped with no problems. I
expected EAC do a lot of (slow) error correction to get to
that point, so I am surprised that it's even possible for a
very scratched disc to rip that fast and produce 100% track
quality. I have discs that are in much better shape that took
much longer (1-2x) and come up ~99% for track qualtiy (though
the error correction worked and the sound perfect).

Can anyone shed some light on what's going on? Thanks.
