- Equalizer - editing MP3s _without_ encoding (such as with GoldWave)?
- Posted by Logan263 on August 26th, 2003
I hope I have the terminology correct; here's what I know: when I use
MP3Trim, the files load fast and, after editing, save fast.
When I use GoldWave or SoundForge, the loading/saving process is
extremely long. That's fine as far as this goes. I'm learned to live
with it for the most part.
p.s., iirc, MP3Trim claims it's fast because it doesn't encode or
decode, or whatever it calls it.
---------
I asked for help in an earlier thread within last week on how I can
fix sound problems, likening it to needing to do what I do to physical
media such as audio cassettes or VHS tapes played through stereo - I
fix sound issues by adjusting the equalizer on the stereo during
playback.
The answer in the thread was to use an equalizer feature in GoldWave.
I ran into the problem, however, that by the time I load these long
compilation MP3s and use that, that it has to reload the file to see
results. In other words, there is no preview feature so sound is
played as per normal, hence no change. There is an OK button at the
bottom of the equalizer box, though, and after pressing that, the file
begins to re-load presumably with the new sound. It was taking the
same amount of as the intial load into GoldWave! Well, that brings up
the issue about if the sound still is not right, what do I do then?
Reload "n" numbers of times till I ge the okay sound??? The amount of
time involved would be totally unacceptable.
So, what are the alternatives? The ideal would be an audio editor
that works like MP3Trim, quickly and easily, but that has an equalizer
function. MP3Trim doesn't have this otherwise it would be the perfect
thing to use.
Anyone know of such an animal?

This applies to Goldwave v5.04
The preview button is a green arrow (play) inside the equalizer dialog,
NOT the play button in the transport control. Whilst playing you can
adjust the sliders and listen to the effect. Once you have it sounding
like you want, *then* press Apply and Goldwave will apply the
equalisation you have chosen to the wav.
If you want to preview a portion not at the start, select the portion you
want to test before going into the equalizer. Preview and adjust the
sliders, name the settings and add(+) as a preset. CANCEL out of the
equalizer. Select the whole file, re-enter the equalizer, call up the
preset and Apply.
I hope I haven't missed the point :\

What version of Soundforge are you using?

Nope, you got it in one!!
Well, looks like I must upgrade. In v4.26, which is what I have, I
get the Equalizer box by clicking EFFECTS > FILTER > EQUALIZER ... and
the box has the 7 vertical bars re the different Hz available to
change, the presets box and an OK, CANCEL and HELP buttons. No
preview. So I'm not losing my mind; there should be one. It didn't
make sense to me that there wasn't one. So, it's just a question of
getting a version that does.
THANKS much!!!

Maybe what you look for is under options>file formats>default save
format.
In Soundforge 6, process>EQ>graphic>preview. There's a nice 20 band
graphic.

Kewl, thanks so much! Why they fixed something that wasn't broken is
beyond me; but since there's a workaround, no problem in the end..
v5.04 is very kewl, esp. now that I get that back.
Absolutely stunning! Wow! I'd have found it eventually if I knew it
was there, but you saved me a ton of time.
I like how there's a gain right there on that box, too. If I had to
fix a file via equalizer and needed to decrease/increase volume, nice
to know I could do it all in one spot. I'm liking Sound Forge a lot
the more I learn how it works. (p.s., was using MP3Trim for gain
changes till now since it's so fast to load.)
Thanks much for your excellent help!

You're welcome Logan. I've received lots of tips from others, it's nice
to pass them on.
The best tool for changing the volume of mp3s is mp3gain which works
without decoding/re-encoding, matches the volume across a folder of mp3s
and will notify you of any clipping.
