- Flash players that play by track order
- Posted by Not A Speck Of Cereal on June 30th, 2005
Hi all,
I bought an iRiver iFP-899 and was astonished to find that it would
only play MP3 files alphabetically by file name. What is this, the
90s?! I looked in all of the menus and read the manual and could find
nothing that would configure it to play tracks by the ID3 track
number. Why, why, why?
If I'm wrong, please correct me. :^)
If this is true, can someone recommend a player that will do this for
me? How about the Creative Nano (previously known as the Muvo)?
Thanks for any pointers,
Chris

[] Rename the files prefixing sequential numbers in the order you want them
[] to play. The number needs to have as many digits as there are files
[] that will be loaded at one time in your player (<99 = 01...02...etc.
[] >99 = 001...002...etc.). Almost any file renamer can do this.
You know, that's so 90s. I'd rather than the MP3 player companies just
grew up.
I've digitized all of my 1800 CDs (emails requesting me to share will
be ignored--I paid for my CDs). Do they really expect me to rename all
of the 20,000 MP3 files when there are perfectly good ID3 tags in
them?
I already know that these companies can do the right thing--I have a
Creative Nomad Jukebox 3 that does--why can't these flash players do
the same?

Probably not - and in his frustration at realizing his stupidity, he's sure
to bang his sloped forehead against the keyboard in some pitiful attempt to
insult his intellectual superiors.
These insults will of course include numerous homophobic slurs - as though
the schoolyard taunt of "fag!" actually has any conversational currency in
an adult forum.
Every village needs an idiot - and a whipping boy - so we've been
twice-blessed.

[] Ummm...because they are cheap?
Ummm, no, they're not. They're $150 to $200 for a 1GB model, which is
a lot for a bic lighter sized piece of plastic with an embedded OS and
a couple of buttons. They're making big profits on these things.
Adding some smarts to the OS is not going to increase their
cost-of-manufacturing by an appreciable amount--it's just code. They
could add this feature with a firmware upgrade without pulling units
from the channels or re-tooling production.
[] Because there are lots of suckers to buy them?
Not at all. Apparently, I'm starting to sense, these units have been
marketed at the younger downloader, who will use a playlist or will
shuffle the tracks and may only rarely have complete CDs on it.
The only trouble is, now that they've got larger capacity 1GB units
out there rather than 128MB and 256MB models, they're starting to look
nice to buyers like me, who would like to take 12-15 CDs with me on a
5 day plane trip.
And play them in track order.
I guess I have to give up and get a Zen Micro, which is a HDD unit
that's double the size of the largest flash player, but is smaller
than most HDD units *and* has a smarter OS.

I've tried 3 different 1GB flash players, none with the ability to
play by track order. I gave up and ordered a Zen Micro.
Maybe next year...

I bet you turn of the music when you have friends over to avoid
'sharing' it
with people who haven't properly payed for it.

[] What the fuck does paying for your CDs have to do with your willingness
[] to share them?
Um, honesty and integrity?
I'll share my CDs (not MP3s) with friends who want to listen to them,
of course. I only do this for people I know, and for those that I know
will buy the CD if they want their own copy.
[] I bet you turn [off] the music when you have friends over to avoid
[] 'sharing' it with people who haven't properly payed for it.
Somehow you equate "playing it for them" to "giving them an illegal
copy"?
Don't enroll in law school--it'll shatter a lot of your
misconceptions.

You forget the fact that it's illegal. I guess copyright law is a
"moronic misconception" to you, but it's not to me. Your statements so
far do absolutely nothing to debunk this.
And please, don't quote the famous vocal minority celebs (most of them
rich beyond our means) in the industry that lend support for sharing.
It's their opinion and they're welcome to it, but the don't speak for
most in the industry. I know many, MANY more in the industry who don't
share that opinion and in fact depend on their CD sales to make a
living. They have families, kids, and MP3 sharing hurts them.
So without the insults, let me ask you this sincerely. When I mention
that I have my CDs digitized online and then get emails from someone
asking me to share them, what possible reason would I have for doing
so?
Really.

Yeah, I read what you said earlier. Evidently you don't understand
what dadiOH and I have suggested, but that's no big loss. The solution
you're taking locks you into a very limited number of playback
devices. The solution suggested by dadiOH and I works for every device
you've encountered, or will encounter.
The idea is not to rename the files on your hard drive, but to rename
them when you offload them to your portable device. Thus the 20,000
MP3 files are named fine for permanent storage. For temporary
(portable) storage files are renamed as proposed to make any of the
devices I offload my music to play them in the order that suits me.
Works wonders for me; I wrote a utility that allows me to off-load and
automatically rename the tracks in my WinAMP play list to any location
of my choosing, which is usually a memory card or 10. I don't have to
deal with the bulkiness/weight/battery/price issues of a HD based
player, and because both my PDA and my Lyra use SD cards, I have one
or two MP3 playback devices on me at all times.
