I'd like to legally download mp3s. The sites I've visited won't let me look
at what they
have available without first asking for my credit card number which I'm not
comfortable
with. Are there sites that will let you look at what they have to offer
without registering
with credit cards first?

Which sites are you referring to ? Most major sites (iTunes, Rhaphsody,
eMusic, Napster ) will alllow you to browse without signing up.
