- MP3 DVD players??
- Posted by Jenny on May 24th, 2004
Hi,
I'm looking for a portable MP3-DVD player. I'll be using the player
mainly for DVD audio (both MP3 and normal DVD audio), but occasionally
for 'regular' DVD video. I don't relaly care for an LCD screen on
the player, just outputs for the audio and video signals. The player
should be truly portable, with a good interface/navigation (support
for multiple folders when playing MP3's), and a headphone jack. I'd
really like it to play both MP3-DVD's and MP3-CD's. Does such a
player exist?
The only thing that I could find that was remotely close to this was
the NextBase 4 (MDV7-S) (sold via merconnect). However, the
interface looks horrible, as I understand that it doesn't support
folders more than 1 level deep and you use 'left' and 'right' buttons
to move up and down 'tracks'. This is unacceptable for an MP3-DVD
where I could have hundreds of MP3's...
Is there anything else out there?

Maybe you should wait for a portable "HiMat" DVD player. There are several
out now for home use, but I have not seen a portable yet. Search on HiMat
and you'll see what it does to a CD--seems like what you want.

My little cheapo 'Initial' portable DVD player will do all that except I
don't know if it supports DVD Audio, but it definitely plays audio CDs,
MP3-CDs, and MP3-DVDs as well as DVD movies. It also does JPG slideshows
and plays MPG files too, I believe. The navigation is fine--just a file
directory browser. The only issue there is a limited number of characters
per line, so you wouldn't want to have your MP3 files named
'artist_album_songtitle.mp3' -- but having a the normal directory hierarchy
of artist\album\song.mp3 works fine. I used this setup for quite a while as
my portable MP3 player with DVDR discs full of MP3 files until I couldn't
resist a $129 20G Archos. It does, of course, have an LCD screen, but it's
still the size of a CD player (only thicker).

You may still be able to get the Sony MDP-AP20U.
I bought one off e-bay recently. It was the only DVD/mp3 player I
could find, which seems truly amazing.
It is a little more than the size of a bulky CD portable, plays mp3
and wav format audio from CD-R/RW and DVD-R/RW and DVD+R/RW (and CD
audio, obviously), is a CD-R/RW writer and DVD movie player via USB2
to a computer. (When you specify DVD audio, do you mean DVD-A? It
doesn't do that).
Audio software and navigation is crude compared to, say, my very nice
iRiver CD mp3 player. It will navigate directories/folders OK, but
all navigation also involves the immediate playing of the track you
navigate to. D'oh. Thank you - I want to see what's where on my DVD
WHILE LISTENING to the track I want to listen to. It displays mp3
tags (limited to something like 'name', 'album', 'artist' I think, and
displays the filename in the absence of tags).
It also grinds around a lot while track seeking. The software is
crude. It comes with a joke docking bay made of very cheap plastic
that holds 8 user supplied rechargeable AA cells (supply your own
charger too). This is an almost essential piece of kit to prevent
thousands of user complaints about battery life - you see, when
playing a DVD movie in portable mode (i.e. away from a mains socket),
the internal battery lasts 90 mins. Have YOU ever seen a movie that
lasts just 90 minutes recently? (Oh, and it doesn't take power from
the computer USB port - they are limited to 500mA and this beast needs
twice that). BUT, it IS a DVD mp3 player... It's also cool with all
those other functions. It was never worth the $300 price tag, but at
$120 off e-bay, new, it's OK.
Finally, I truly detest Sony for many reasons. One of those reasons
is their reply to my question about this machine before I bought it.
I didn't want to be lumbered with a proprietary Li-Ion battery, so I
asked them if it used one, and if it was user replaceable, what the
cost was, and for how long it would be available. I got a weasel
worded reply in poor English. I didn't have time to enter into what
would probably degenerate into senselessness with them. Of course, I
got lumbered with a proprietary Li-Ion battery. They all but lied to
me. Now, of course, they won't even reply to me to tell me the price
of the battery and where it is available from.

I forget what the acronym stands for. It's a Microsoft,Panasonic, etc. joint
thing for file and menu structure on Cd's .
