- Mp3 files on CD-Rs don't play right on standalone DVD players
- Posted by Ray on November 29th, 2004
Using Easy CD Creator, I make data CD-Rs consisting of nothing but mp3
music files, (up to 160 per disc, no folders)created with CDex v1.51
sampled at 44.1 KHz and fixed 192 kbps. When I play these discs in my
home computer or either laptop, using Winamp, they play perfectly. When
playing these discs in either of my two standalone DVD players (one a
Lenoxx brand, the other a Go), there is a pumping effect in the level.
That is, it's like someone is adjusting the volume up and down maybe 4dB
every few seconds.
The manual for the Go unit states: "The DVD+VCR can play MP3/WMA
formatted recordings on CD-ROM, CD-R or CD-RW discs." I've gone to the
Setup menu and set the values as recommended in the manual. The
filenames that I choose are longer than the 8 characters the manual says
they *should* be, but that shouldn't be a real problem. The names, in a
shortened form, display properly. My sample rate is within the 8-48kHz
range allowed, and the bitrate is within the 30-328 kbps allowed.
The Lenoxx manual recommends 128 kbps, so my discs violate that.
Any ideas about the cause of pumping problem, and what I can do about it?
Thanks,
Ray

A shot in the dark here...if you are playing through an A/V receiver. Take
it out of surround or cinema modes. It may be splitting frequencies for the
channels & causing a volume variation. Put the receiver in normal 2-channel
stereo mode. Not too familiar with DVD players but...if there is a setting
for MPEG mode, make sure it is set to MPEG1 NOT MPEG2.
Just guessing...nobody else jumped in!

Thanks for the suggestion. I shut off all the effects in the receiver,
but that didn't solve the problem. Then I got to thinking - both my DVD
players have the same problem. Both are routed to my Sharp TV before
going on to the receiver. So I played with the TV's audio setup program.
When I turned off a function called Equisound, the problem was solved. I
don't understand why TV sound was okay with Equisound on, but not sound
routed through the TV's line inputs.
Anyway, thanks again.

Equisound is supposed to keep volume constant during program changes and
commercial breaks. It certainly didn't work that way on external inputs.
Anyway, thanks again.
