- Question about RIAA

I'm kinda new to this, but I was wondering if this is a US issue or are they
going after people elsewhere too?

Well it is actuallly not the RIAA that affects the users per se. It only
was made possible due to the silly DMCA law in the US that allows them to
subpoena personal data without a legal due process.
in other parts of the world are similar organizations like the RIAA, but
the copyright law currently in the EU is not as broad and empowering.
Unfortunately it is supposed to change shortly.
in the EU and the US the citizens have to raise hell with the parliament
and have these laws challenged and changed .

But there are no exemptions. The DMCA has a few, even through they are so
narrow they are effectively useless and even if they do apply you need a
very expensive lawyer to use them.

The RIAA only works in the US. There in an international equivilent, the
IFPI, as well as national equivilents in many countries. These may decide to
start similar campaigns. Due to the berne convertion copyright law is
roughly the same in all member countries, but small variations affect the
difficulty of sueing users. Some, such as the USA, have copyright laws
rediculously strong which let a copyright holder sue someone without any
real proof and still have a good chance of winning. In the case of the USA
the unlucky victim probably couldn't afford a defence anyway, the civil
legal system in infamously expensive. In others the copyright holder would
need real proof and would still have a very hard time just getting the ISP
to say who was using a given IP at a certian time.
