It is also Mikrosoft's method of weaning folks from non-proprietary formats
such as mp3. Only a fool would think that they may not have bigger (read:
money-making) plans for their proprietary wma format down the road...
Additionally, wma quality only seems to be better below 128kbps. Generally,
about the only time one would use files recorded at that low of a bit rate
would be for portable players, and wma files have been shown to eat portable
player batteries at a greater rate than mp3 files.
