Agree with a lot of this, but ...

.... is way too short. eMusic does about 30s, and even then you often miss
the tune of the song because of a long intro or instrument solo. I'd say a
minute at the same quality as the dl from near the middle of the track is
the minimum workable sample.

No way will I buy a CD just to get less than half the tracks, and no way
will I pay over £10 for a CD unless most of the extra cost is likely to be
going to the artist, ie: it's from a label such as the No Master's Voice
cooperative which specialises in UK Folk Music. Hell, some DVDs on the
racks in UK high street shops are cheaper than the CDs in the next rack,
and the cost of making a film is mega multiples that of recording a CD!

I've been wanting the industry to provide legal, quality pay per track dls
at a realistic price for *years* now. I would happily pay $1 per track or a
price per minute or per second yielding a similar result. And let me make
this absolutely plain this would be *extra* money the labels aren't
currently getting from me. in personal terms *BIG*, *BIG* extra money.

I own about 200 CDs, but at its maximum my vinyl collection reached about
400 LPs and I think about 150 45RPMs. I am making up a list of odd tracks
that either I'd like to keep from the vinyls or else, being single tracks,
I've wanted but never actually owned. I have already spent about $150 on
legally purchased downloads from Liquid Audio and eMusic (before the latter
became a subscription based service), but I've gone through all the labels
available thereby, the list is still over 1000 tracks long, and I haven't
nearly finished going through the collection yet!

So that's a *minimum* of $1000 of my money the labels are missing out on
because of their Luddite behaviour towards new technology.
