Recommendation - Portable CD-Mp3 Player
Posted by John on July 16th, 2003

Would someone please recommend a portable CD-MP3 player that I can use in my
car radio with a radio kit. I recently purchased a Sony Car Ready, Atrac
3plus, D-ne518ck and it will not recognize most of my MP3 discs. In fact
it will not even recognize Sony discs, just says no file on them. However,
it will recognize and play real old cheap blue-back discs such as PNY. All
in Joliet format, all work in my two cheap, Apex DVD/MP3 players etc. I had
this problem with an old Phillips CD writer years back and it was most
frustrating. Please recommend a player that recognizes most all discs.
Thank you.

I have two: One is an Audiophase ($40 at Circuit City with car kit)
and a Classic. It was more but I bought it a couple of years ago. I
really like the Audiophase...turn it off and it will pick up where it
left off next time you turn it on. The Classic is OK too but won't
resume like that; no matter, I use it on AC in my shop and simply put
it on pause at the end of the day.

I buy cheapo discs - usually Imation - and always the light blue-green
phthalocyanine ones. Like the PNY. Both players have played all
regardless of brand except one...the only discs I've ever had problems
with on anything, anywhere were Sony. Don't recall the type of dye
but it was a darker blue. The portables sometimes hang on or skip
files on those discs.

I have a RioVolt SP90 which seems to play all types of disks OK - complex
file structures, multisession, the lot - though I have had a problem with
the odd file that shows up on the list but won't play - not sure what it
was, might have been a high bitrate..? My main complaint about it is that it
is very easily jogged - OK it supposedly has 2 mins antishock but that's no
help if it's continuously being shocked! Also it doesn't start caching a
file until it starts playing, so play is most likely to be interrupted at
the start of a song.. Don't understand why it can't read ahead to the next
file. Anyone know if the higher models are better in this regard? I have
version 1.0 of the firmware, which supposedly it *is* just possible to
upgrade - haven't really looked into this but might be worth it if these
niggles can be solved...

Hi Chris
I also have the SP90 and I upgraded my firmware and I now have the option of
a personalized graphic equaliser amongst other things. Email me direct for
more details.
