Recommendations for a car MP3 player?
Posted by CRawlin163 on July 12th, 2003

I'm looking to put a CD player in my Ford Explorer and want the ability to play
CD-Rs containing MP3s. Does anyone have a relatively inexpensive suggestion
(under $300).

Thanks.

-Chuck

I just bought a Pioneer that plays cd-r/cd-rw and mp3's for $179 from best
buy and am extremely happy with it. Model DEH-P4500MP Ite evens comes with a
real nice remote!

MP3310 for a year and half and have loved it. Until 2 weeks ago. While
playing an MP3 DC the player went nuts and stared squealing. I had to
turn the thing off. I turn it back on and it now can't play any CDs -
MP3 or otherwise. MP3 CDs, it just keeps blinking "File Scan" and Audio
CDs it plays but there is no volume - you hear nothing. Radio still
works. *&^%$#!

That's nice but way too expensive for me.

Get a Kenwood. Multiple models at varied prices. They play nearly anything
MP3 wise you put in them. They have an extremely short gap between tracks.
They will NOT random across disc, only random in folders.
The Alpine units are very good too.
JVC units also get high praise from owners.
Sony has had major problems in the past with VBR MP3, I don't know if they
solved it in the current models.
Pioneer has a noticeable gap between tracks & this is killing their sales of
MP3 units from many people who have bought their products in the past.
Go to www.highwaymp3.com & take a look through the forum section for any
model you may be interested in.
I have a Kenwood KDC-X659 Excelon that has worked flawlessy for over a year
now. It has never skipped on an MP3 disk, never failed to load/boot a disc &
has played everything encoded at different bitrates/quality with zero
problems.

Thats nice too. $288 !! Isn't there anything for around $150 that will play
mp3's?

You can probably get the low line Kenwood for around $200 online from an
unathorized seller. Kenwood may not honor the warranty, so check with the
seller for there own warranty.
Your other choice is Ebay. You can find many of last years models at great
prices, new & used.
For $150 you can get a no-name brand player, but most of them are plagued
with problems. Spend $200-$250 & get a name brand, you'll be glad you did.

Bestbuy has a sale going on this week.
You can get Pioneer DEH-P4500MP for 180- 20 mail rebate - 10% off (but + sales tax).

I think its a good one - comes w/ remote - but have heard few issues on nwsgrps:
- text scrolling not continuous
- a post says that it doesn't plays mix rate of mp3 on a cd

I haven't verified the above and haven't got any experience of myself to share.

I believe for mp3 playback thats the cheapest one with good quality & perf.
Anyone please correct me.

Also:
If I m not interested in satellite radio, is there any better deal for me out there?

I have the Pioneer unit and am very happy with it. Not sure what is meant by
"it doesn't plays mix rate of mp3 on cd". As for scrolling text, no its not
continuous, but the last thing I want to be doing while i'm driving down
the road is reading scolling text anyway. Assuming you made the cd, why
would you need scrolling text anyway, you should know what is on it already!
