- Recommendations, please?

Anybody tried any of those pay-to-download sites? I'm actually toying
with the idea, and wondered if anybody had recommendations (pro or
con) on any of them. I'm especially curious if any of them are any
good on older music (some of you would call it nostalgia music,
40s-50s-60s...pretty much anything but extremely contemporary)

Most of the music on the internet (pay or steal) is relatively new music. I
have found my best source for real old stuff is the binary newsgroups. In
Newsgoups search for mp3. I've found some at alt.binaries.sounds.mp3.1950s;
alt.binaries.sounds.mp3.1960s; etc. If you've never used Newsgroups you may
need to click on Help in your message reader to set them up.
Only problem is they are multi-part listings (part 1 of 12; part 2 of 12;
etc) and you must combine and decode them. Some use different encoding
schemes so it becomes difficult to actually combine and decode them.
Easiest way is to search for, download, and use Grabit. When you go to
those newsgroups they will already be combined and Grabit will decode and
download them to mp3 status on your hard drive. Simple stuff.
