- Recording voice into MP3
- Posted by Matan on February 3rd, 2006
Hi,
Anybody knows how much space (in KB and MB's) does it typically take to
record voice into MP3? such as in USB MP3 players which can also record
through their mic. On average, how much space does it consume per
minute?
I need to estimate which capacity gadget I need for 60 minute recording
at a time, with good quality.
Thanks!

Approximately 1 MB/minute at 128 kbps, half that at 64.

No
I'm afraid not, mono is the same size as stereo but better quality.

Be warned that many 'mp3' players actually record from the microphone as WAV
format. These can be MUCH larger (10 Mb per minute at CD quality), though
you may be able to get more recording time using lower quality audio
settings.
Getting good sound quality may be an issue too with players that only offer
a tiny (or tinny) built in microphone.

I don't know about that. I know some use ADPCM (similar compression
ratios to MP3) but I haven't heard of any using PCM ("10MB per minute").

into ~28 meg at 64kps bit rate. I use a player from Nextway, a "Digital
Dream Device", no longer in production any more I think, but possibly
available from low end outlets. It has microphone, external line in,
built in speaker as well as headphone out. The recording is configurable
for line in, external mic, internal mic at bit rates from 128 all the
way down to 8. I suggest voice could be recorded at 16 with reasonable
but not hi-fi quality

No, I'm afraid you got that wrong too. mp3 encoding uses mid/side
encoding so that encoding a stereo signal does NOT need twice the bitrate
of a mono encode.

But anyway the discussion was about filesize and it still remains that a
128 kbps stereo mp3 is the same *size* as a 128 kbps mono mp3.
