- RIAA Lawsuits for music sharing
- Posted by Ceci Powell on December 1st, 2003
If you are concerned about being targeted by the RIAA and its
music-sharing lawsuits, check out ShareControl™, the first
"self-policing" software designed to allow you to take control of the
music sharing capabilities on your computer, whether it's at home,
work or school. The application searches your hard drive for the most
popular music-sharing programs and reports the status of any programs
found (Sharing enabled or disabled), as well as all MP3 files. The
user can then decide whether to enable or disable the sharing
functionality, and to delete or retain the MP3 files. For more
information, visit http://www.music-amnesty.com.

Explorer'...

I checked it out. The website deliberately lies about the program.
The first page claims that ShareControl will find and identify illegal
music on your computer. Since the RIAA has repeatedly refused to
provide a comprehensive list of copyrighted tunes, that claim is hard
to accept. Digging farther into the site, it turns out that
ShareControl merely finds and displays mp3 files, without attempting
to identify which ones are copyrighted or even which ones are music,
nor does it search for any other format of music file.
Additionally, the site is selling this program. You have to pay money
before they let you download it. They claim that it will only run on
one computer. If you have two computers, you have to pay twice and
download the program twice.
Oh yeah, they advertise one free upgrade, too. I guess that would be
to update the non-existant RIAA copyright database.
The site claims that they are not affiliated in any way with the RIAA.
That, combined with the simple fact that their program won't do what
they advertise, tells me they are con artists, trying to make money
off people's ignorance and fear.

Joe

I forgot to mention...
The disclaimer on the site informs us that neither the presence of
ShareControl on your computer, nor the use of ShareControl provides
any legal protection from the RIAA.
Clearly, this is a scam.
