- Setting up system to play mp3's on home stereo
- Posted by Carolyn on June 8th, 2005
My stereo is upstairs and I would like to be able to play mp3's on it.
Can anyone give me some suggestions as to how to accomplish this?
My system is not set up for wireless yet and I would like to have some kind
of a screen that would enable me to pick the songs from my living room if
possible.
I have heard some suggestions which include buying a cheap computer for
upstairs and manually connecting it to installing a wireless router (not my
favorite choice). There is also some system at Best Buy which is supposed
to work but I don't know anything about what the hook up would entail.
I also have looked into a physical link (DFX has some cables for this) but
the computer is more than 50" away from the upstairs stereo.
Thanks in advance,
Carolyn

Thanks for the suggestion. I had not heard of this component. It appears
that you can use it and still be able to have your computer speakers hooked
up as well. Is that right?
How is this thing installed? Does it connect to a USB port or does it
connect to the sound card? This will still work even though I don't have
wireless capability? At least I don't think that I do. I cannot locate the
guy who built my computer and am unclear whether I have that capability or
not and how to check to see whether I have it.
Thanks,
Carolyn

Yes
___________
A.
1. Hook transmitter to sound card output (PC doesn't need
"wireless")
2. Plug transmitter power supply into AC
B.
1. Plug receiver into stereo input (with supplied RCA plug cable)
2. Plug receiver power supply into AC
C. Turn on both transmitter and receiver
D. Turn on stereo to AUX (probably)
E. Play MP3s on computer
F. Sound comes both from PC and stereo speakers. Effective distance is
100' line of sight, less through walls.

If your stereo is not mp3 capable you can burn regular music CDs. Most burn
programs nowdays will automatically convert your mp3s to regular audio that
your stereo can play. Only problem is that you won't be able to get
anywhere near the number of songs on a CD when you burn normal audio rather
that a data copy of your mp3 music. When you burn a CD as data for mp3 you
are limited to 650MB which allows nearly 100 normal songs. When you burn a
CD as audio you are limited to 74 minutes play time which only allows for
about 14 normal songs.

Thanks so much for your instructions and the link to the review. I am going
to buy it today and install it as soon as it comes in. It looks to be just
what I was looking for and the price is very reasonable.
My husband is always asking me to burn CD's for him that include songs for a
mood or all songs from the same group and I am running out of CD's. I tried
to explain to him what I wanted to do with the computer and stereo, but I
don't think that he understood how it would work. This way, he will be able
to play whatever I have on my computer and I will not have to stop and burn
him a CD when he gets a hankering to listen to something.
Thanks again,
Carolyn

You could burn your MP3s to a CD or a DVD and play them through your DVD
player. Hopefully you have the sound going to your stereo...you can choose
the folders/songs on your TV screen.

I am trying to get away from burning CD's. It is expensive and there is no
way to burn enough CD's to cover all the songs that I have. I cannot burn a
CD with mp3's because my DVD player won't recognize this format (it is about
6 years old now and that is what we are using to play normal CD's that I
burn). Besides, I would like the ability to use playlists to set up what I
want to listen to on any particular day. The contents of a CD is always the
same but sometimes you want to listen to a different mix of songs.

The SqueezeBox looks interesting, but since I don't have a wireless router,
I would have to run 50 ft. of cable through finished ceilings to get to the
box in the living room.
I also wondered if an mp3 player or a hand held computer would do the same
job well and have enough capacity to store 20G of music? This, again, may
be a more expensive solution than I wanted. Some people buy a cheap
desktop to do this as well ( I wish my old one hadn't died on me).
A Roadrunner guy who was out here recently mentioned something about the
D-Link MediaLounge Entertainment Network 802.11g Wireless Media Player that
you can find at best Buy. Has anyone heard of this one?

I am confused. You can buy a wireless router for around $50; that's
too much?

You could use CD-RW or DVD-RW discs.
You could get a new DVD player that will play all formats, for less than
$100.

It is amazing how much the prices have come down on those players since we
bought ours. I suppose that is an option but I hate to buy a new one when
the old one still works. Who knew that mp3's would become so important?
)
I had not thought about using CD-RW discs, though. That is an option, and
cheaper than burning endless CD's. I would really like to get away from
burning the CD's altogether, though, if possible.

I don't know that the D-Link was much of a consideration after I saw the
price tag. Whenever I think about doing something like this, I always
research the options, from high to low but have to admit that I usually end
up buying from the low to middle price range. I want to get something that
does what I want for the best price and the easiest installation.
Sometimes, more bells and whistles aren't necessary, sometimes they are nice
to have, sometimes they are a necessity.

Given her history (over years) of posting to usenet, and usually with the
same old problems (and stubborn obstinance), I would say "free + 2 cents"
would be her "budget".
Is that a trick question? Don't confuse ~Carolyn~.
Also, please refrain from using shortforms/acronyms.
Equally confusing to her. Honest.
Good idea - send her off to count.
This should take some time. The NG gets a rest.

I believe that there is another Carolyn or Caroline that posts to this
group. Have you somehow confused me with another person? I do not post to
this group very often.
If you are just starting to get into using your computer for music and
understanding how everything works (hardware, software, ripping CD's storing
music, players etc.), I suppose it could be annoying to those who have been
doing all this for many years.

While that is not out of the realm of possibility, your archived posting
history on usenet leads me to a different conclusion. However, if I'm
wrong, I would be happy to apologize.
Fair enough, but several thousand posts would indicate you are no newcomer
to computing, and for some reason, I had the strangest sense of deja vu
when reading this thread.
