sound card emitting phone-ring
Posted by naniwadekar on January 25th, 2004

Today, while playing an mp3 file on winamp which I had
known to be quite clean, I could hear a sound akin to phone
ringing, mixed with the mp3. Even after the song ended,
the speakers continued to emit the sound periodically.
This is the first time I noticed anyhing like this. I rebooted
my desktop and the sound was gone.

What might have happened ?

This is a long shot, but do you ever use any instant messaging software for
live voice chat purposes, or participate in any live voice chatrooms?

I don't and I have not installed any new software recently
to the best of my recall which might make big changes to
my setup. I have been using DSL for almost a year now
and have never had this strange problem. The other computer
in my apartment is not used by me and its user, who uses
the same DSL connection through a router, could be on
live chats; but even that is unlikely. Besides, it shouldn't
affect my computer, surely ?

The phone didn't ring while the speakers were making the
ring-like sound and the phone has wroked properly since
the mysterious sound was heard.

Was it a mechanical ring? Like an old style telephone? Then I have not got a
clue.

Was it an electronic ring? Could it have been electro magnetic interference?

I don't know the difference but it did not sound odd. So I guess
it sounded like an 'electronic' ring. I don't see how anything might
have caused interference which went away on rebooting.
Did winamp start picking something on top of what was
being played ? The clip was playing quite clear but just the
sound of ring was added to it.

I was thinking along the lines of your soundcard being a bit loose or maybe
your speakers picked something up (or to be more precise, the inbuild
amplifier).

Did you check if your soundcard was properly in the slot and the connectors
of your speakers were plugged in far enough?

Could it be a part of the mp3? Maybe who ever ripped it accidently
recorded the ringing as well.

I will do these things if the problem reoccurs. And the ringing
sound is not part of the mp3. I have played that song/mp3
before and since the problem without any interference
of that ringing sound.

Well as I said, that *was* a long shot. Really long, I suppose. I was
thinking (in my 3:00AM haze) that it might be possible that you had
something running which was playing sounds picked up by the microphones of
people you were connected to in a live chat situation.

Ian.

Maybe it was Planet Earth calling naniwadekar?

Next time this happens, look at your Mixer/Windows' volume control, find
which playback devices (LineIn, Midi, WaveOut, Microphone, etc) are enabled
and turn them off one by one until foreign noise goes away. That may tell
you its source. Also try other players before you reboot, so you'll know
whether it's WinAmp's doing.

I knew Telegraph's site was given to playing some sound-clips
but the sound used to be quite loud, not of the subservice
nature which caused me confusion. Thank God the matter is
cleared up now.
