Transfer WMA (winamp media file) to MP3?
Posted by Joe Gillis on November 6th, 2005

I have music files that are WMA, Winamp media file. When I try to burn
them to CD, I can't. How can I transfer them to MP3s?

I use Adaptec Easy CD Creator 4, Win98.

You want to make an audio CD, correct? There is no point in making MP3s
as those would just have to be decoded to wave when you make the audio
disc.

To make waves from your WMA files, load the files you want into Winamp
keeping in mind that audio CDs will hold 80 minutes of music. Assure
that Winamp isn't set to repeat, then...

Ctrl + P (Winamp preferences)
Output (under Plug-ins)
Nullsoft Disk Writer (or Wave writer)
Configure

Now play the files. You'll hear nothing and they will "play" rapidly.
You'll wind up with a wave file of each song...use Easy CD to burn
those. Don't forget to put Winamp back the way it was.

So in other words, if you are new to all this, then it's just too
complicated. So much for the claims that "everyone can now download music
and record their own CDs!"

Firstly -- files with a .wma extension are Windows Media Audio files, not
winamp files.

Second - there must be a gazillion free programs out there for converting
wma files into mp3 files. do a google search on the subject. seek and ye
shall find, my friend.

If Winamp is the default player for wma, "Winamp media file" becomes the

I use Cool Edit Pro for all my audio editing needs. It works great
although it was bought up by acrobat (i think) it's still available in
some circles. It will transform one format to another and will do what
you want. Do a google for wma to mp3 and i bet you get a bunch of hits
for programs that will suit your wants.

Also, i use CdEx for ripping cd's and Nero for burning them. So far
i've not had any trouble doing what i want as far as audio files. I've
even created my own answering machine "tapes" with this editing tool.

You're thinking of the software giant ADOBE, which makes the Acrobat
software.

Yes, they bought Syntrillium, the previous developers of Cool Edit.

Cool Edit Pro is now called called Adobe Audition.

Also don't forget to turn off equalizer if it should happen to be on before
you start.

Works great to make audio CD's and also convert to mp3's.

Remember too that the new files take lots of room.

In article <dkksnb$797$1@news8.svr.pol.co.uk>,
chris@newsgroupinfo.wanadoo.co.uk says...

decode, burn. yup, complex.

needs to be changed to "anyone with half a brain can do it".

thank you! That's it. Also i got Syntrillium's Snoqualamie (sp) noise
maker... it's kinda cool.

These are likely DRM WMA's you idiot. Adaptec Easy CD Creator 4 won't
decode these files to audio CD.

He's not using Winamp asswipe!

He wants MP3, not WAVE idiot. Read the OP. This is just another
example for your inflated arrogance.

Don't forget to put Winamp back the way it was.
The programs recommended on this website are outdated, and obsolete at
best. What an amateur!

You really are stupid! The DRM WMA's are decoded when burned as an

computer harddrive.

The OP doesn't want waves asswipe!

Convert, then burn waves using two separate programs? The OP is likely
trying to burn DRM WMA's to CD for playback on a CD Audio player. If
this is the case reencoding back to MP3 is unnessesary. Read the OP
next time moron before spouting your ignorant mouth off.

This website is laughable! Obsolete!!!!

Yes he is. Otherwise he wouldn't have any files on his system associated
with WinAMP. He obviously *does*: WMA comes up as "Winamp Media File" on
his system.

Yes, the contents of PCM-WAV and CDDA are similar. The point he made is
that *there is no point of using MP3 as a go-between*.

You really are stupid!

We know that! He wants to burn an audio-CD, but since there isn't any
software to directly make audio-CD's from DRM-WMA's, he'll have to do
convert the DRM-WMA's to something else first!

Well, gee! You just said yourself that the point was that he wanted
MP3's! Make up your mind: do you understand that he wants to make
audio-CD's or not?

And, moron, just to nitpick while I'm at it, the original files are
WMA's, not MP3's. So he's not reencoding "back to" MP3. He's just
reencoding to MP3.

Obviously, you're either unable to read or unable to comprehend what's
written! Go back to reveling in your outdated website programs, and
while you're at it shove the new Baby Ruth King Kong up your ass and
rotate!!
