Vinyl to MP3

I have managed to record from an old tape recorder through a mini
Hi-Fi into a laptop computer using Audacity.

I'm trying to do the same with a record deck and same setup. However,
I don't get any sound coming in to the PC. With radio and CD I get the
sound (via line-in through the laptop speakers), but when I set to AUX
(the record deck), nothing comes through.

Any ideas?

A record-deck has a much lower output than a tape-deck, CD, or radio. You
must use a pre-amplifier with a magnetic-cartridge input. The pre-amp
boosts the deck's low output, to a level needed by the laptop's line-in
jack, and applies the necessary RIAA de-emphasis.

Some record-decks actually come with a suitable pre-amp built in, which
can be enabled as required.

Michaels on the ball, I use a cheap old Tandy mixer (it also boosts bass &
treble as it's a pre-amp) with a Magnetic Phono input, works great on an old
Poineer record deck used with a Stanton cartridge, (used in
broadcasting\discos) these cartridges/Stylus's are quite forgiving on old
vinyl. I record at 32hz 16 bit stereo and encode at 128kbps, but you could
go higher and better quality to 44hz.
