- A way to auto-sort MP3's?
- Posted by Jay B on July 4th, 2004
Well, since you were so helpful in pointing me towards MP3Gain to solve my
volume problem - I thought I'd drop another on you:
Is there a program that will automatically sort thousands of MP3's into
folders based on the "genre" tag in the file? That would be super-cool! I
got so much music, I can't get it all sorted!
Thanks
J

While the folders are only within the program Media Monkey will do this.
The program has a lot of other useful features. The free version only lacks
some minor improvements. The ability to export to an Excel file is useful.
http://www.mediamonkey.com/ Windows will sort by genre and you can then
select and move the files to folders as you choose. Music Braniz is another
helpful program when you have a lot of files to deal with.
http://www.musicbrainz.org It will help you find and deal with mislabeled
files. I think MP3 Shield was also mentioned here recently, it's another
must have program when you're dealing with a lot of files. I've found that I
get about 50% false positives, but it's very useful for getting rid of
corrupt files.

Tag&Rename for one. Alternatively, use an MP3 database program - then it
won't matter where the files are physically.

ID3TagIT will make folders and sort based on most any field, genre
included.

I think almost any tagging program will do it. Any that is worth a damn,
anyway.

Well, looks like there's no lack of great programs for this... I took the
tip from one of the replies and used windows to sort by genre (I didn't know
you could set that up as a bar). Then I realized all the genre tags a
basically wrong anyway - looks like it's back to the old way of doing
things.
Thanks,
J

I didn't (don't) either. How does one induce windows to read tags? I see
no reply explaining this marvel. And what's a "bar"?

Nevermind, I see that he was talking about a making a spreadsheet and

bitrate/genre, etc. If I go to a folder with MP3s then right-click on
the columns in Explorer (when in detail mode) I have options to show
bitrate, genre, etc. and can sort by those fields. I have MP3-ext
installed - not sure if that's what gave me these features or if XP has
it by default.

Around here it's called a pickup joint.
The latter gets you the former.
