What do you guys use besides Kazaa Lite K++, WinMX, and SoulSeek?
Posted by Ivan Boy on November 23rd, 2003

Lately, when I try to download music from popular artists, I get fake
or damaged files, and if I get the actual song I'm looking for, it
sounds really crappy... What do you guys do to avoid this? Do you use
any other programs to download music?

Thanks,

Ivanolo.

XNews: http://xnews.newsguy.com/ I don't think I've ever downloaded an
actual fake from the bins.

You can verify the authenticity of some music files available via Kazaa
here, though: http://www.verifieddownloads.com/

Ian.

Bittorrent (Azureus client) and suprnova.org works nicely.

Well, thanks guys! I'll give those suggestions a try. I can't believe
I didn't find some of those before... Guess I was using the wrong
terms. :P

How does it work with the newsgroups? I've used them alot, but not for
downloading music. What newsgroup is the best for finding a good
selection of files, and how do you go about finding the particular
song or title that your looking for?

Thanks,

Rayd8tor

You can do a search of the binaries newsgroups here:
http://www.bincrawler.com/default.aspx The best place to start looking for
mp3 files is within the "alt.binaries.sounds.mp3..." hierarchy. The main
group has a ton of stuff, as does the "...complete_cd" group.

Ian.

Newbin Pro is one of the best binaries agents.

It's one of the VERY few begware programs I've ever actually paid for. Well
worth the money.

Oh, and Sam's Club has 200 gig drives cheap :-)

I went looking in newsgroups for the songs and such, but it seems like
alot of the files posted are either incomplete or are really difficult
to locate. the www.bincrawler.com site is helpful, but when I would go
to the newsgroup that was supposed to have the file, it would not be
in the group. Am I doing something wrong here?

Check date posted. Your news server probably retains files for a shorter
period of time.

As Don M. indicates, you're at the mercy of your news server's retention.
In my case, Rogers Cable, it's three days at the most. So the binaries
groups aren't always as handy as Kazaa, where you can search for any song on
a whim and download it. I generally find myself browsing the bins rather
than searching them for something specific. It's amazing how often I'll
just stumble across stuff that I didn't even know I wanted.

Regards,
Ian.

That makes complete sense. I'm with Roadrunner and don't know for sure
how long they keep the files, but I doubt it's for very long. On the
same subject, I see a lot of files in the bins that have weird
extensions that I don't recognize. Do you know of any site dedicated
to the newsgroups that has info on what programs are needed for what
sorts of files. I'm fine with the typical .zip,.mp3,.jpeg and such,
but there are alot more out there and not sure how or what i'm
supposed to use in order to decode the files and put them back
together into a usable file. Thanks!!!

Larger files like movies and software are often posted in .rar format, which
you'll need WinRar or similar to unpack. When you're downloading a series
of rar files, or even just a bunch of mp3 files from the same CD, it's
helpful to download them into their own seperate folder just to keep things
organized. A handy site for explaining which file extensions need what:

Thanks guys. I checked out the sites you suggested and got a lot of
good stuff off the groups this past weekend.
