- what are most portable sample rate & bit rate for am radio qualiityvoice?

The MP3-CD player in my car will not accept 11025 Hz sample rate MP3
files. If I want MP3 files that will play on almost any hardware &
software, but with compression appropriate for AM-radio quality voice
recording, what parameters should I use?

Try 96kbps/44.1kHz/mono.

Then there is little reduction in file size over a standard stereo music
file. But perhaps music files are all that one can count on handling
using unspecified generic MP3 players. Is that so? I want to be able to
play on any device I might obtain in the future.

I use 128kbps/44/1kHz/mono and get over 12 hours on one CD. Enough for
most purposes. Excellent for talk radio and adequate for casual
listening to music or in the car.

on one CD. That runs on all the hardware I'm using now, but I don't
know whether it could be regarded as universal. I want to archive all
my audio on as few DVD's as possible.

24 kbps is not a standard mp3 (mpeg1,level3) bitrate, the minimum is 32
kbps. The standard sampling rates are 48 khz, 44.1 khz and 32 khz.

It is possible that some combination CD/mp3 players will only support
44.1 kHz.
Note that the sample rate and stereo/mono mode do NOT affect the filesize
of the mp3. The filesize is only dependent on the bitrate.
