- What players can do this?
- Posted by Stu on January 31st, 2004
I want a 20 GB (or more) portable player that can
Shuffle play all songs on the player and when it has played them all once
stop. This will take awhile for a 20 gig player soooooo
Start up again where it was when powered off.
The Rio Karma might do it? Do any of the Creative Zen Xtra's do this?
Thanks for your collective help.

well, on the other hand, depends on how do you see things as "portable". If
laptop is OK, then anyone will do.

Rip Van SleeperMan woke up and said...
Why is that?
These aren't portable?

You don't get out much do you? You're reading these mp3 groups yet
somehow oblivious with the ipod and mp3 players of like dimensions and
capacity?

Gee.. i dont' even look at 300$ portables. I'm not THAT rich, you know. I
look portables for normal mortal people.
Portable for me is 50 - 100 $ max.
Paying 300 bucks for shitty portable...you must be crazy, no offence.

What do they have inside---HDD?

Yep, they do have HDD inside. Sooo, you go and listen to it (while running,
for example), then it falls down by accident, you pick it up---nada. The
easiest and most stupid way to waste 300 bucks. HDD's are sensitive to
shocks, you know, no matter how manufacturers may claim shoch resistant. It
must be in space chamber to be shock-proof...
That's why portable must be either with chip or CDR. Otherwise it's not
portable at all, no matter how small it is. And that's why i wondered about
20 G on portable!

Wake up Sleeper. The original question was for HD players. Plus, you ain't
gonna find 20GB on a flash card for a good long while. Quantity, light
weight and inexpensive don't go together yet.

What kind of nonsense is that? Portable means able to be carried around.
Doesn't have to be shockproof or use a "chip" to be "portable". (I assume
you mean flash memory not chip but what the heck, details be damned,
right?) The OP was asking about a kind of machine that surely and
certainly exists and how one might work to do something HE wanted it to
do, not you. You implied quite strongly and wrongly that such a device
does not even exist.
How the hell do you figure a CDR is any more shockproof than a properly
made hard-drive portable anyway? I've got two CDR based portables and
certainly can't do much more than a brisk walk with them along.
You cited a notebook in your earlier post as the only available method of
storing and carrying 20GB of music around. Somehow you weren't aware of
the fact that a 20GB portable is far from the largest portable available.
Now you want to redefine portable to try and lend some credibility to
your faux pas. What a load of hogwash.
Go back to sleep, willya?

That part is true. My mistake.
Such a device has built in memory which holds data for a certain time.
Playback is actually from this memory, not from CD directly.
I have InnoAX player (it holds small CDR's) and it has full 8 minutes of
memory, so i can shake it for quite a while wihtout any disruption in
playing. THAT'S portable for me.
Ooops...i didn't say notebook is portable for me. I said " depends on how do
you see things as portable" .Maybe he see notebook portable. I don't. I also
don't see any HD based player as portable. What can i say---i'm very clumzy
and i drop things...
Somehow you
Disagree again. For me, largest portable is some 512M. (i guess i could get
more since 1G and 2G chip memories are available).
Now you want to redefine portable to try
Nope. I still claim that 20 G portables doesn't exist. Those you say are
portables, are just small home players for me.
(but then again, everyone has the right to have it's own opinion, right)

Nope, original question was about 20G players. Noone mentioned any HDD, only
some models. I can't memorize all models what they have inside.
But i agree that 20G flash cards won't be around soon. However, 2G can be
obtained, although they are so bloody expensive, so i don't even look at
them.

I have a 256MB ScanDisk flash memory drive that I use to move files from
office to home and vice versa. I love it. Can't wait until flash memory
comes down in price so I can get a GB portable mp3 player. They're just too
expensive right now.

Suddenly, SleeperMan sprang forth and uttered these pithy words:
Same for all the HDD players. What's your point?

MY point: When you shutter CD player, it can easily catch it's track and
continue. When you shutter HDD and damage the drive (note that heads are
microns close to the plate)...

1000US $.. (Not much, huh?) I really wonder, which asshole buys them...
But i can send you one...just i would need some cash in advance (100% will
do + p&p)
....They're just too expensive right now.
Finally we agree in one point!

Besides the debate on Portability... It will sit on my car seat most of the
time.
Will someone help me with my question please. The idea is sort of a no
repeat couple of months with my music. Something for long commutes in the
car.
