- Will updating Kazaa Lite keep it Lite?
- Posted by Karl Engel on September 22nd, 2003
I've been using kazaa Lite 2.0. Everytime it starts it asks if I want
to update to a new version. I say no. This time, maybe I said yes
without meaning to, but Kazaa update 2.02 downloaded in the traffic
pane; Artist: Sharman Networks. When it asked if I wanted to install I
said no. My fear is that this is Kazaa (+spyware) rather than Lite. Am
I right? Does Sharman Networks try to hijack versions of Lite to
update them to the full version?

You are right- it's the full Kazaa you just downloaded, so don't install it.
I clicked on the "yes" button by mistake once myself. The file probably
went to your shared folder- just delete it.

Ian.

Ian is right! Do not update your cracked version of Kazza! It will
update it to the full version of the spyware version. My suggestion
for you is to get the latest version of Kazza Lite which I believe is
2.4.2
Good Luck

Thanks! Boy they're sneaky! Why doesn't Lite V2.0 try to update itself
to a real Lite update?
And is there any advantage to 2.4.2 over 2.0?

Because the lite version is a hacked version of the real one and any
"automatic update" site would be shut down pretty damn fast.
Aside from bringing some users of lite 2.0 who aren't paying attention
back to the full spyware laden versions, you mean?
The problem with not upgrading p2p apps seems to be that the people who
write the programs and manage the networks they access take steps to
ensure that the older versions no longer can access the networks
properly. As long as the version you have is connecting correctly and
getting/sharing the stuff you want to get/share there is probably no good
reason to upgrade. On the other hand, there is no real reason *not* to
go to the newer version, as long as you make sure you go with the lite
version.
