- Winamp doesn't save settings and playlist
- Posted by claudio7c0@gmail.com on November 21st, 2006
Hello
I'm using Winamp 5.3 on Windows XP SP2. When I start Winamp with normal
user right it doesn't keep the playlist after i close the programm. It
also doesn't save the display settings, for example it shows the
equalizer every time i restart the software.
Is there a way to change this? Can I move the Winamp config file to
another directory where I have got read-write rights???
Thx for your help! Claudio

That may fix your problem - it sounds like the ini file is write
protected, and therefore cannot save any changes when Winamp is
closed.

Yup, definitely sounds like it. This typically happens when you burn
Winamp to a CD or DVD and then copy it to a computer. What you get are
files flagged as "read-only", meaning they don't get changed as usual
when you close the program.
It's a pretty simple thing to fix - just browse to C:\Program
Files\Winamp or wherever it is that you installed WinAMP, right-click
Winamp.ini, click Properties, and make sure Read Only is unchecked. Do
the same for Winamp.m3u.

The problem ist that I don't have write-permission in C:\Program
Files\... as I'm logged in as a normal user. Winamp shouldn't just run
well with admin-rights, souldn't it?!
That's weird...

When you install Winamp, it gives you the option to save each user's
configuration in their Documents and Settings folder, which is
necessary if some of them don't have write access to the Program Files
folder. I always run as administrator, but if you don't want to do
that, reinstall Winamp with the option to save in the user's folder.

Or just log in temporarily as administrator, right-click on Winamp.ini
and winamp.m3u, select the properties/security tab and check the "full
control" box (or whatever it's called in your language version of
Windows) to enable full rights for all users for those two files.
When you log in again as a normal user, it should be OK.

Yes it should, since without admin rights it doesn't have permission to
overwrite files.
