does anyone know where i can get a wma converter for free? or at least
how to convert them in winamp3?

why would you like to convert those wma-files? winamp has no
problem playing them.

Maybe because some people don't trust Microsoft? Or because .wma may not
be as secure as .mp3? I know it's been speculated that spy or tattle ware
could be hidden in a .wma file.

WMA files, like WMV or ASF, can contain scripts. Thats executable code,
which is inherently insecure. Its never been used to create a virus to my
knowledge, but it has been used by several porn websites to put together
promosional fakes for p2p. They create their fake song and share it, someone
downloads it, opens it, the script runs and launches a popup of the site.
As well as that, WMA is a very propritary format. Microsoft has patented the
container and codecs. It views under windows because WMP provides the
filesneeded for decodeing, but it doesn't view under any other OS. The
codecs are also full of compatability problems. A file created under windows
XP wont nessicarily view under 2000 because 2000 comes with WMP 6.4, not
WMP7. If you install WMP7 you get even worse problems.
