Auto Play CD

Sometimes - most times - my CD drive doesn't start automatically. Is there
something I can set on my computer to tell it to run the CD whenever there's
a CD inserted? Or does it depend on a setting residing on the CD? Thanks,
Jeannine

Hi, Jeannine.

In My Computer, right-click on the CD drive, then Properties, then the
AutoPlay tab. Here you can set it to behave as you prefer.

I wonder what the CD type would be for a CD that has a new program on it?

Hold the <shift> key down when you insert the disk.

Hi, Gerry.

As Rick said, just hold down the Shift key when inserting the CD - and hold
that key until the CD drive light stops blinking.

Or, for a (semi)permanent solution...go to the AutoPlay tab that I mentioned
before. Either click the bottom Radio button (Prompt me each time...), or
click the upper button (Select an action...) and then choose "Take no
action". You have to do this again for each content type. But if you click
Restore Defaults at the bottom, it checks the Prompt me... choice for all
types.

TweakUI has a setting under My Computer/Autoplay to disable
autoplay for individual drives as well as entire types of
drives, such as CD/DVD or removable drives.

I've used the shift trick in the past. In XP, I have to hold it for a very,
very long time. Through the busy cursor with the CD attached to it. This
appears while XP tries to decide if it should autoplay a disk or not. Keep
holding until that cursor disappears. Finally, release the Shift key.

Currently, I use TweakUI for XP to disable autoplay. I have a DVD writer
and a CD writer on my desktop. Using the settings in the power toy, I
disable autoplay on one drive and leave it active on the other. Then when I
insert a CD, I use whichever drive is going to give me the response I want:
autoplay/no autoplay.

Or if there is only one drive on the system, TweakUI could also be used to
toggle autoplay on and off - whichever is most convenient at the time.

When I bring up "Mixed Content," the choices become "Open folder to view
files using Windows Explorer:" or Take No Action. The radio button is
checked "Prompt me each time." Even so, the CD does not start (I have to go
into My Computer and click on the drive. Then it usually starts.
Sometimes, however, I have to actually double click the setup or startup
file. Am I missing something here?
Thanks, Jeannine

Hi Jeannine,

No, you're not missing anything, this happens sometimes. There is a file
here that when run will fix this issue:
