- Can't upgrade to XP on a compaq running ME
- Posted by Al on January 19th, 2008
Hi,
I just reloaded all my software from my Compaq recovery disks and now I
can't upgrade to XP
I was able to upgrade in the past.
I try to upgrade and the program acts as if ME is not installed and asks for
a full XP Disk, not an XP upgrade disk. My Compaq recovery disks don't work
to validate the install
Any Advice?

I found this tip on th web. Hope it helps:
Begin the windows install as if it was the full version, during the install
you will be prompted for a previous operating system, at his point put your
old operating system CD in the drive and browse to the I386 folder (for
Windows NT or 2000), WIN9X folder (for Windows ME), or WIN98 folder (for
Windows 98). Click ok, the windows upgrade will confirm this is a full
version and continue with the upgrade (after you replace the upgrade CD).

I was booting off the upgrade disk, so ME was not running at the start of
the install process.
When I already had ME running and put the upgrade disk in the drive to
autorun the upgrade worked fine.
