- Connecting to Internet via crossover cable
- Posted by ilyaz on October 23rd, 2005
I've created a network of two computers connecting them with a crossover
RJ45 cable. Now I can access the shared folders on both machines and print
documents on the shared printer. My host machine is connected to Internet
with a wireless router. I'd also like to get to the Internet from the other
machine. However, whatever I tried, I could not get it working... Is it
possible to get to Internet via crossover cable? If yes, how to do it?
Your suggestion is appreciated.

Doug,
in the past, you were always very helpful and provided very useful
information. Also, on your web page I found a lot of useful information.
However, today, for some reason, your advice is rather cryptic and it did
not help to solve my problem. Of course, I went to Help and looked for
Internet Connection Sharing, but there is no mention of my problem.
My problem has two sides. First, I'd like to know if it is at all possible
to get to Internet using cascade connection. I have a network of two
computers, <old> and <new>. In the past, I connected the old to the router
by cable and the new wireless (parallel connection).
Recently, I moved the old machine to another location and connected it to
the new machine by crossover cable. The network is still there, but I have
no Internet access from the old machine. The new machine is still wireless
connected. Is there a way to get Internet access from the old machine
connected to the new machine, which, in turn, is connected to the router? If
it is possible, then I'll appreciate a step by step instructions...
Thanks for your assistance.

Use the Connection Wizard on both PC, answer all questions, and they will be
configured.

If the OP has a router, why not connect both computers to
the router with standard CAT 5/6 cables and do away with
ICS?

Right click My Network Neighborhood and select Properties. Right click the Network connection in question (in this case your wireless connection and select Properties. On the Advanced tab, you should see the option to Allow other users to connect through this computer's Internet connection. Enable it. If the two machines can already talk to each other via the cross over cable, you should be all set. If not, on the client PC, ensure that it is set to obtain its IP address automatically and its DHCP server addresses automatically.
