My control panel is in list view. How can I get it back to category view?

At the top of the left panel click "Switch to Category View".

Sorry to be a goose, but what do you mean by left panel? When I access
Control Panel, I get a list similar to the list of programs. There is no
left panel.

Are you using Explore rather than Open to view the Control Panel?
If Explore, then try Open instead and you will get a left panel.

I am accessing the Control Panel from the Start menu. How else can it be done?
