- Posted by Rainy on November 14th, 2005
Hi.. I have been trying to login to Bravenet.com and I get the prompt that
my cookies are not enabled! But they are enabled in Internet options.. I
have a Paid Adwatch Monitoring, free AVG and free Sygate.. and have looked
to see if there is a setting in one of these that is getting in my way..
when I try and follow along with instructions to enable cookies, I find
that they already are enabled.. I also use Avant Browser... I'm sure there
is a setting somewhere but I can't find it..any help appareciated.. thanks

1. Try the site with a different browser (IE, Opera, Firefox). If the
problem disappears, you know it is a setting in your Avant browser.
2. Disable whatever Paid Adwatch Monitoring is and see if that helps.
You have something that is protecting you because when I go to
bravenet.net, a popup appears that is an ad for "AskMen.com" which is
obnoxious and possibly dangerous. When I close out of the popup, I see
an error message on the main page that says "(EC) Sorry, but this
service has suffered an unrecoverable error of some sort". Now, whether
this error message appears because the site would like to stealth d/l
something on my computer and is failing because I don't use Windows - I
have no way of knowing.
However, I know what I think of this site. I certainly wouldn't use
them. If you are determined, then you will have to look at your
third-party security programs and your browser security/popup blocking
settings and see what is preventing you. No one can do this but a
person sitting at your computer.

Hi Malke.. I use bravenet for counters and guestbooks... I would really love
to know what you think of them.. I think it might be a problem with the
website.. since I have gone to my bank online, which you must have cookies
enabled.. and I can login just fine. I tried to use both IE and Avant.. I
stopped the popup protection.. and got the same error as you.. Avant is
basically an "much enhance" version of IE but isn't spyware... like IE is..I
also removed Adware SE Watch.. and still got the same.. I think I will just
wait to see if the site recovers from that "error" or whatever.. lol I
have something wrong with my home page...and found that the script from
bravenet is causing the problem.. so I wanted a new copy and paste.. but I
can wait.. thanks Malke.. appreciate your response..
Ps. Sorry, adwatch is Adware Se Pro.. comes with an adwatch.. that sort of
guards the door..

Isn't requiring you to enable cookies enough of a reason?
Isn't obnoxious popups enough of a reason?

I already told you what I think of bravenet.net. You certainly can get
counters and guestbooks elsewhere if you are just looking to d/l code.
If bravenet.net is hosting your website, you will have to deal with
their tech support. Or look for another web host. I assume that
bravenet.net is not your ISP. Most ISP's offer free space for a
homepage on their servers; I see you are using att.net which was
purchased by Comcast. If this is correct and Comcast is your ISP, I
know they offer 25MB for a homepage with web building software. Most
free webhosts are ad-supported. I can't give you a recommendation for
any of those because I don't use them; I like my own webhost very much
(http://www.hostingmatters.com/)but I pay for it.

Hi Jim... I never see the obnoxious popups.. (I had to open IE to see them)
and don't understand that cookies are bad... I understand that some are good
and some are bad... no it's not enough of a reason.. because I don't
understand cookies at all, and you are not giving me any information... are
you saying that my bank is bad because I have to enable cookies.. You know I
am totally confused now...

No my host is Mediacom for my cable connection.. I don't know where you got
the idea it was comcast...? and Toaster Hosting is my host for my
website... I don't need any more space, .. since I pay for the 500 MEGS I
have...and still have plenty of room.. also the owners are friends.. and
they are very supportive if I have a problem..
You did not tell me why you did't like them.. just that you didn't!
Can
you tell me why? because of the popups? that it is ad supported?
Yes you are right I can get codes elsewhere, but I would lose my guestbook
entries.. and they are kind of important to me.. I would not like to start
over.. although if you can tell me why it's a good idea to start over, I
certainly will! Appreciate any response.. thanks Rainy

I'm not qualified or interested in discussing website design or the
like. I already stated my reasons for disliking bravenet.net, but if I
wasn't clear enough - I don't like sites that immediately throw up a
popup at me, especially one with a "click me" button and I avoid them.
For any web design related issues, post in a newsgroup specificially
for web design and/or website issues. I thought you might have Comcast
because your headers showed att.net and AT&T's cable business was
bought out by Comcast. Not important.
