- Posted by funnybones42 on January 16th, 2006
When I bought a new computer it had windows xp on it. When I tried to read
information I had saved on a cd from my old computer it shows up on the
screen encrpted. How can I get my computer to read these disk properly. I
hate to loose all this data. I would appreciate any help.
Thank You

If it is truly encrypted files and not an ownership issue, then you will
need to make sure the following conditions exist:
a) Your new computer needs to be running WinXP Pro or MCE (Home has
file encryption disabled).
b) You need to export the encryption certificates from the profile that
encrypted the files from the old computer.
c) You need to import the encryption certificates from the old computer
to the profile you wish to have decrypt the files on your new computer.
If you don't have the certificates from the old profile, then the files are
as good as lost. If there was a back door into the file encryption system,
then it would be a very good file encryption system would it? Then anyone
could decrypt files encrypted which would defeat the purpose of having file
encryption.

Do you have the necessary program on your new computer to read the files you
have saved to the CD from the old computer. The files may not be encrypted
at all.
