Enough of 'M15 Persecution'.
Posted by Jackson on November 24th, 2007

Every blessed day a handful of posts show up on each and every
newsgroup that I subscribe to. Even when I surf through other
newsgroups at ramdom I run into these M15 rantings. The posts are from
<<MI5Victim@mi5.gov.uk>> and concern M15 persecution (whatever that
is).

My FreeAgent does not support a kill file. Is there some way I can
get this jerk out of my groups. I know this is not an XP thing, but
the culprit posts on all or many of the XP groups. This has to be an
abuse of the system and I have been hoping his isp would shut him down
but the massive crossposting continues week after week.

Jackson,

Try this: Don't Read His Posts! You'll have the last laugh.

Yes. Use a newsreader that *does* support a killfile. Upgrade to the
full Agent, or use one of the many other choices with a kill file.

Whose ISP shut what off? And why are you posting in HTML? You should be
using Plain Text for newsgroups.

Thanks for the response, but no, I don't use killfile unless it's for
something I know I'll never see again; things that don't get responded to.
This idiot does make responses so it won't hide him from showing up in
quotes.
Perhaps he needs a loser-attitude-readjustement-tool. Even the most
blatant idiots occasionally feel those.
And besides, I was serious in my questions; his response sounds pretty
iffy to me.

Cheers,

Join the community of the internet and learn some interpersonal skills and
human courtesy.

I'll assume from your lask of response that you are an idiot, a liar , and
knew nothing about what you implied in your response. Must be rough for
anyone having to share your air for miles around you.

BTW, teletype is alive and well in some communities, but I'm betting that
falls on deaf ears<g>. Without it, many would have no way to communicate.

Your slip is showing.

I never see those posts. My OE killfile must be working just fine.

If you'd rather not use OE, I know that Xnews has a lot of filtering
capability.

Get a better newsreader, of course.

Indeed. So post to the right newsgroup: news.software.readers for
help in using your reader, and one of the news.admin groups to
discuss the abuse.

Yes and no. It's possible to download binaries using OE, but it's not
necessarily easy. Furthermore, OE can't handle yEnc messages on its own.
See:

I prefer OE (along with the OE-QuoteFix add-on) to handle text
newsgroups. I rarely download binaries, but when I do, I use Xnews,
which runs circles around OE in that department.

The problem with HTML is scripts and other executable content. I think it
should be easy to support a subset of HTML that allows formatting but not
any executable content, but that is not done; it is unfortunate that it is
not. Plain text format makes it impossible for malicious content to execute.
Using HTML means you are intentionally making other people's systems
vulnerable. That intent can be interpreted as being rude to the world.

Plain text also means that images are not shown, and spammers can use images
in email to determine that an email address is valid and in use. Therefore
for that reason and due to the threat mentioned above, I have Outlook
Express set to read all email in plain text format by default. I can always
switch to HTML format if I trust a message, but it is safer to initially
open email in plain text format. For those that don't use that option, their
concern about HTML format is very justified.

A third advantage to plain text that might be minor is that some people use
slow connections. In fact, in the past, some people pay by the minute for
their internet connection. Plain text format is inherently smaller than
HTML. The difference might be small but imagine how people that are affected
in that manner feels about HTML messages.
