File association hijack
Posted by Frank on January 3rd, 2006

I use both Access and Matlab. The MAT extyension is associated with Acess
and labeled as an Access Table Shortcut. I went to folder options and
changed it to Matlab, the overwhelmingly most likely association for the work
I do. When I did this nothing happened. The association window that I
changed it in warns me that I have chosen to change the association HBUT in
every directory it is still listed as Access and not Matlab.

Becasue it is an Access Table Shortcut I am not offered the option of
opening with anything else. There is no open with option and I cannot change
the association.

What jow as this is a pain.

Go to the "PC Magazine" web site and look for Quick Association - it may
help.

Jerry,

Thanks for the tip. I took a look at the description. It ought to do what
I want.

It seems a bit odd that I have to pay for a separate program to do what
Windows ought to be doing anyway.

Does anybody know how to deal with this within XP or is it a 'feature'?

Thanks

Frank
