- I cannot find How to Back Up option in the Control Panel
- Posted by WON on January 18th, 2008
I have Windows XP, and I would like to back up my laptop to an external hard
drive. I understand that I can do this by selecting the "Back Up" from
Control Panel; or via Start-All Programs-Accessories-System Tools. I do not
have this option on my control panel. How do I get this option back? Can
someone help me?

Chances are that the Laptop manufacturer did not include the backup program
in the OEM version of XP.
You can download a copy from this site

If your version is XP Home then it was not installed and will need to be
manually installed. There was a reason for that given that the Backup
program is not designed for a home user. I've used it with XP Home and it is
very limited in what it can do. Backups are very, very important. Acronis
TrueImage is a popular backup program recommended by a lot of folks. They
have a trial version that you might want to give a go at.

XP Home Edition?
Backup is installed automatically on XP Professional, but not on XP
Home. If you have the complete XP Home CD, find backup on the CD, in
\ValueAdd\MSFT\NTBACKUP and install it yourself by doubleclicking the
file ntbackup.msi.
If you don't have an XP CD, you can download ntbackup.msi at
http://www.onecomputerguy.com/software/ntbackup.msi Also see
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=302894
However, as backup software goes, this is almost certainly the poorest
and least-capable product available. I recommend that you invest a few
dollars in a better product, such as the excellent Acronis True Image.

easy to use.
However I have investigated a simpler system for a friend and would
recommend 'Karen's Replicator'
http://www.karenware.com/powertools/powertools.asp
This system does not compress data so should only be used for smaller
amounts of data.
