- Icons Not Loading in System Tray
- Posted by Spencer on October 23rd, 2005
I am using Windows XP Pro SP2 with latest updates. My System Tray used to
hold icons for the printer, volume control, my network, Zone Alarm Pro,
Norton Anti-Virus Auto-Protect, Dell Support, and APC Powerchute (my UPS).
For about the last two months, the icons for volume control and for
Powerchute have usually failed to load. In addition, loading the icons
takes longer and longer.
I scan with Norton Anti-Virus, Pest Patrol, and Ad-aware at least every
other day. I recently ran Trend Micro's House Call complete scan and
CWShredder. I find nothing but the usual tracking cookies. I doubt my
problem is a virus.
I have unloaded every program which has an option not to load at startup.
(Zone Alarm Pro, Norton Anti-Virus Auto-protect, PestPatrol, and Dell
Support.) None has seemed to be the cause of the problem. With them all
unloaded, Powerchute usually shows itself and occasionally the volume
control will show, but not regularly. Reloading any of the other programs
seems to crowd out volume control completely and reloading several of them
crowds out Powerchute.
I am at a loss how to work up this problem. I have been thinking of buying
a registry cleaning program, but I don't know which one to buy, and I notice
they are not well regarded in this newsgroup. The right way to start would
be for me to understand the problem, but I don't.
Please give me any suggestions you can. I will try to supply more
information when I learn what is needed.

This happens for most Auto-Logon users. To see what the three methods/workarounds
are visit the above site.

TaurArian,
The "Ostuni Workaround" on www.michna.com/kb/WxSystray.htm appears to have
worked. I used the Control Panel method. All icons now load.
Thanks again. I was beating my head against the wall.
