importing addresses from excel worksheet to outlook adress book
Posted by visigirl on January 16th, 2006

I have inputted a bunch of names and phone numbers in excel work sheet. I
need to import them into my outlook address book. I know I need to save the
file as a .csv file. How do I go about doing that?????

File | Save as. Under "Save as type," choose csv.

File >> Save As

Sometimes the obvious answer is the right answer. :-)

Sorry, I am very far from an Excel expert, and don't really know. I know
Outlook somewhat better, but I've never needed to do this, so can't say for
sure. You might want to ask your question in an Excel or Outlook newsgroup
(or both).

You don't say if it's Outlook or Outlook Express or the version but
they are all similar go to the file menu and look for import. There
should be a choice to import a text (CSV) file. Just follow the prompts

Yes, she certainly does. She says it's Outlook. Is there a possibility that
she makes the same mistake many others have made and really means Outlook
Express? Of course there is that possibility. But she said "Outlook" and I
have no reason not to take her at her word.

Yes, of course. But exactly how well that works, or whether the original
spreadsheet had to be in a particular format or not, I'm not sure. Do you
know? If not, I still recommend that she ask in an Outlook or Excel
newsgroup to make sure.

Actually I do know. I've imported CSV files into Outlook on many occasions.
But you are correct this is OT and any further discussion should be in in
one of the Outlook groups.

Great! Glad to hear it, and thanks.

Since you know, she shouldn't have to go there and she should be all set.

Outlook, at least OL2k and OL2003 will import directly from an Excel file.
There is no need to save as anything else.
Thats not to say the field mappings will be correct
Its sometimes best to export eg an OL contact to Excel, see how the
resulting fields are mapped, then if neccessary adjust the excel file you
wish to import
