"Incorrect Function" for CD burning
Posted by DCM on May 22nd, 2008

O/S Windows XP Home Edition

I am having a problem with my CD drive that looks like a software issue. The
basic background is that I can use the "D" drive to play music CD's but am
unable to write text to the CD and when I try to "save as" from Word, I get
the following error message

"Incorrect Function
You do not have access to the folder 'D:\'. See your administrator for
access to this folder"

The CD which was working six months ago is a Samsung CDRW/DVD SM-308B
DVD/CD-ROM drive that is OEM with the IBM unit. Since I generally save
day-to-day files to a floppy, I seldom use the CD for storage but am in need
of it now for some large file creations.
I have run a "Troubleshoot" on the hardware and it comes back as working
without problems. I have also checked for software updates but the driver is
current. I have searched the Microsoft Knowledge base to find a relative
solution but the problems do not appear to resemble mine. I have no idea
where to look for an answer and most importantly a "fix" so if there is
someone in here who can guide me it would be appreciated. It is possible
that it is an easy fix but I am not the brightest penny when it comes to
registries and buried files so if you have a solution, perhaps I could ask
you to be specific in your guidance.

Thank you for your help.

From Word do your "Save As" to your PC first - eg in My Document. Then open
Windows Explorer, find the file you've just saved, and drag-and-drop it to
your D:\-drive icon. You should get a notification from the System Tray
(bottom-right, near the clock) that you have files waiting to be written.
Add any more you want, then click on the balloon to write.

I did as you recommended. Opened My Documents in Explored and dragged it
over to the CD Drive and now I am now getting an error "Windows encountered
a problem trying to copy this file. What do you want to do?" After "RETRY"
five times, I cancelled out.

What kind of disk do you have in that drive?? CD, CD-R or CD-RW ??
CD = no writing
CD-R = should have worked as Olórin adviced (no direct save)
CD-RW = either as CD-R , or, if formatted (with Ahead's InCD or Roxio's
equivalent), as a big floppy

First - what is the Make and Model of the CD drive in question. Is it even
a CD-writer?

Second - what third party software do you have installed that allows you to
write to a CD like you would a floppy diskette/thumb drive/other portable
read-write media. That is not a feature of Windows XP natively.

To answer Thomas Wendell:

The disk I am trying to write to is a Memorex High Speed CD-RW Rewriteable
12X 700MB 80Min

To answer Shenan Stanley:
The make and model of the CD is Samsung CDRW/DVD SM-308B DVD/CD-ROM
It is the original CD that came with the IBM NetVista
I do not have any other software programmes that involve writing to CD
I am getting the impression that this is down to the way I am doing this
somehow. Before when I saved to a CD, I am sure I would "Save As", then
select "D" drive and it would then automatically save it to an icon on my
desk for future burning to the CD which does not happen now. I simply get
the errors noted early.
Thank you for your continued attention to this. It really is driving me mad.

Perhaps another clue! I have just attempted to copy a picture to a CD (a
Memorex High Speed CD-RW) and the screen is prompting me to insert a Disk
into the drive when there is one there already. Is it possible that I am
attempting to use the wrong CD? And, if so, what CD should I be using?
There is no indication on the package that the CD is already formatted or
NOT formatted so I have no way of knowing.

Hello,

You can't just use a program to Save a file to a CD you have to use a CD
burning program to burn a set of files to the CD.

There are many freeware and shareware CD burning programs out there and a
quick Google search on "free CD burner" should get you a good list of them
to try out.

I appreciate everyone's help on this. It took me a while to figure things
out but my problem is now resolved.
It turns out not all CD-RW blank disks are created equal. Who knew? I was
using a high speed CD that was not being ready by either my computer or my
software and after some trial and error found the problem. I am now able to
transfer large text files to CD without a problem.
The aspect of XP that does not allow such text files to be burned directly
from MS Word to the CD does not seem logical to me but then I am, in no way,
a computer genius as those from Microsoft so I defer to their intellect and
their knowledge.
As far as a third party CD burning software is concerned, I would prefer not
to. It seems MS has this set up for a reason and I can only imagine the
cock-up I could cause and the havoc created by adding yet another element to
the process.
Cheers all and have a good one!
