- Internet Explorer not working
- Posted by Robert on February 5th, 2006
Internet Explorer opens but when you click on it, it hangs. This has been
going on for a few days now. Mozilla Firefox is working okay. I just did
an Avast virus scan (free version) and removed 2 viruses from the computer.
That didn't help any. How can I troubleshoot my IE? Would reinstalling it
help?

If you have installa SP2 try this: start > run and type in "cmd" without
the quotes. In the newxt screen type in
netsh winsock reset
and restart Windows.

Okay, I tried that and IE still pops up and then hangs. Mozilla is working
fine. Any other suggestions?

Start > Run and type in "sfc /scannow" without the quotes. It is likely
that you need XP CD.

I did do a sfc /scannow. A small popup appeared and the scan began
(according to the blue line moving across). After a short while it said
that a DLL was missing and asked me to insert the Windows XP disk. I
inserted my 3-year-old disk. (A mistake?). The blue line started moving
again. A few minutes later the screen for the disk popped up with a menu.
I ignored that. Then after a few more minutes the scan completed. I
clicked off the menu screen and restarted the computer. There was no
change. IE is still hanging. Did it actually pull anything off that disk?
Is the disk too old?

It's asking for IEXPLORE.EXE on Windows XP Home Edition Service Pack 2 CD.
Where would I get this? (My Windows XP Home Edition 2002 disk didn't seem
to do anything.)
