- Manually Arranging Icons
- Posted by franieb on January 23rd, 2008
For some time now I have been unable to manually arrange desktop icons.
However, I recently created a new user logon and the icons can be manually
arranged in that logon. What can I do to be able to manually arrange icons in
my logon. Seems that it happened after I got SP2. Thank you for your assist.

Right click, Arrange Icons
Do you have the "Lock Icons" selected?

1) Right-click on your desktop
2) Highlight "Arrange Icons By -->
3) Deselect (uncheck) "Show In Groups (if available)", "Auto Arrange",
"Align To Grid" and "Lock Web Items On Desktop".
After each 'uncheck', you'll have to repeat steps 1 & 2. You should now be
able to align the icons anywhere you want on your desktop. If you want the
icons to be aligned vertically and horizonally, like I do, check or leave
checked, the "Align To Grid".
Hope it works out for you.

Thank you Don and NV Cowboy. I failed to mention in my original post that all
items in "arrange icons by" are unchecked; the "show in groups" is grayed
out. So, what do you think? I'll try checking everything and unchecking
everything. Also, Don, you mentioned a lock icon check format, which I
haven't been able to find.

Fran,
1) Right click on an empty area of your desktop.
2) Click "Properties".
3) Click on the "Desktop" tab.
4) Down at the bottom left of that page click on "Customize Desktop...".
That will open the "Desktop Items" page.
5) There, click on the "Web" tab.
6) There you should see, towards the bottom of the page, a check box labeled
"Lock Desktop Items". Make sure this is cleared, unchecked.
Hope this remedies your problem.

Hey NV,
My Desktop Items dialogue box does not have a "lock desktop items" box. The
dialogue box has one tab, "General". There are three sections: first, shows
the main folders on desktop ie My Computer, etc.; second section is for
changing the icons; third is desktop cleanup. So, any other suggestions?

I'm still trying to find out why I can no longer arrange my desktop icons
manually. I contacted HP at least 1 year ago. Their response to everything is
that you have a virus (although I didn't and never have). From time to time I
will try manual manipulation. I did a few days ago and it worked. Then a
couple of days later, the icons were frozen in place again. I am perplexed.
If anyone has an answer, I would appreciate it.

Download free Iconoid. Position the desktop icons exactly where you want
them. Open Iconoid and "Save Icon Positions." If the icons get messed up
again, open Iconoid and "Restore Icon Positions Now." Done.
This does not explain how your icon positions became scrambled, but the
remedy is simple.

Thanks Ken. The only issue is that your remedy requires me to arrange the
icons first, which I cannot do. I think this issue is related to drag and
drop because I cannot drag and drop from desktop to quick launch, or DAD
files on Windows Explorer. I checked start menu and drag and drop is enabled.
Any thoughts?
