I can plug my ipod into a USB port, and when I power it up, Explorer
makes a noise and displays it as F:
I can do the same with my Zire palmtop on the same port, but Explorer
doesn't recognize it.
What do I need to know to understand what's happening? - Mike

Uh. I don't know. It's an older palmtop and whatever I have in XP
(with SP2).
How do I find out and what do I do? The Zire worked under WIN98 - Mike

Two suggestions:
A. To establish whether you have USB 2.0 available; Control
Panel/double left click the "System" icon/left click the "Hardware" tab/left
click the "Device Manager" button/scroll down to "Universal serial bus
controllers" and expand the list [either by left clicking the "+" sign or by
double left clicking the title]. Then look down the expanded list of USB
Host Controllers for either the word "Enhanced" or USB 2.0, if found you
have USB 2.0 speed available. If not found, you do not.
B. Check the manufacturers Web Site [
http://www.palm.com/us/support/handhelds.html ] for XP compatible drivers
and software.

Good morning Gene - Under "Universal Serial Bus controllers" I have
nine entries. the last is "VIA USB Enhanced Host Controller", so I
assume that means I meet the USB 2.0 availability.
I'm in the process of digging thru the palm support site, but this is
sure tedious - Mike

The USB connector port used on PalmT Zire handheld is designed for
HotSync® operations and partial charging only.
The Palm Zire handheld does not support USB connections to other
consumer electronic products (i.e., digital cameras, MP3 players,
etc.).
The following includes information on the system requirements for the
version of PalmT Desktop 4.1 software bundled with the PalmT Zire
handheld.
Palm Desktop software is qualified to work correctly on any of the
following Microsoft® operating systems. However, the Palm Zire
handheld works only with systems that support USB:

Mungo - my cpu supports USB; the other USB ports connect to the
printer, scanner, MP3, camera.
