replace Maxtor HDD
Posted by odeek9 on December 12th, 2005

Hi- This is a spur of the moment question at 5:00 a.m. so please forgive lack
of details. I have a nice HP Pavilion model a824n. One component I hate is
the Maxtor 200 gb sata hard drive-too noisy. I see a Western Digital on
sale. Rambling-sorry. When I've checked replacement before, was confused by
Maxtor's ide set-up. A weird 2 cable deal coming from the bottom as opposed
to the usual pin connector. Can I do the change with relative ease for a
novice? Do I need some type of adapter?
Thanks for your patience, alan

If you are changing one sata drive for another, albiet a different make,
then there should be no problem. The cable conenctions should be the same.
If, on the other hand, you are changing the sata for a standard IDE drive
then you need to conect the drive ribbon cable forst to the IDE connector on
the motherboard and then to the hard drive. Make sure the jumpers on the
hard drive are set for 'master' or 'cable connect'. They should be, but it
is worth checking. There is usually a diagram on top of the hard drive
giving the jumper settings. if not they will be in the instructions.
As to whether you can do it yourself depends upon you. the job can be a bit
fiddly, but it is easy enough. Just make sure the cables are connected the
right way round.

Maxtor IDE drives do not have any connectors coming from the bottom of the
drive. I am not certain where you've seen that but it is not an IDE drive if
there are cables coming off the bottom of the drive. Perhaps you mean from
the back of the drive. IDE devices connect just like a CD-Rom connects.
Ensure you connect the IDE drive to the Primary Controller on the hard
drive. Check www.maxtor.com they have detailed information on connecting
IDE drives to motherboards.

That's the problem-there is no ide cable, rather wires coming from the top
AND bottom of the hard drive. It doesn't matter-I'm sticking with the Maxtor.
