- System Configuration Utility problem
- Posted by Blair on November 6th, 2005
When I start Windows XP I get the following message
You have used System Configuration Utility to make changes to the way
windows starts.
SCU is in diagnostic sectional start up mode.
Choose normal start-up mode in General Tab to start windows normally and
undo the changes.
The only thing I can think of is I made changes to the programmes which
start by using MSCONFIG.I only unticked three programmes I didn't need to
start.
Can anyone help me .

When ever you open Msconfig but dont change anything, one should press
cancel upon exiting. At the present time, when the window opens, select,"Dont
display at start up".

Msconfig is designed to be a troubleshooting tool, not a "startup
configurer." To cease the selective startup notifications, either
return your settings to the way they were, or permanently remove the
undesirable programs from your startup configuration.
In most cases, with "well-mannered" applications, it's usually as
simple as opening the undesired program and deselecting the option to
"display icon in the system tray" or to "start when Windows starts."
Additionally, Look in the C:\Documents and Settings\All
Users\Start Menu\Programs\Start Up and C:\Documents and
Settings\username\Start Menu\Programs\Start Up folders, and in the
system registry, primarily in the
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run and
HKCU\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run keys.

So, you'd rather have to OP hide the problem, rather than fix it? I
guess I shouldn't complain, though. At least your advice wasn't
outright harmful, this time.

I agree with Bruce not Andrew.
Find alternative method for removing unwanted startup program.
Msconfig is only to be used as "Troubleshooting" feature.

When you change any startup programs in scu it always sets the system for
diagnostic startup. SCU is really intended as a diagnostic tool and not
meant for making permanent changes. There's not harm in the diagnostic
start and you can check to stop showing the message, but I prefer the
following.
Firstly, check whether the programs you want to disable from autostarting
have an option to turn it off. If not, use Startup Control Panel from
http://www.mlin.net/ rather than msconfig to change the settings.

Thanks GTS that's a really neat programme.I have downloaded it and am now in
control of my programmes.
The only snag I can't recognise some programmes. There is no clue in their
titles

msconfig should give you the name, Command and Location. Tell us those.

I was hoping to be able to copy and paste the list but it won't let me.
Is there some easy way to copy the list otherwise there is a lot of typing
involved going back and forward ?

It's not obvious but if you use another tool, you could copy/paste this
info. Start> (All) Programs> Accessories> System Tools> System Information:
Open the software branch and drill down to the section about startup
programs. Click on "startup" in the left pane to select it. Click anywhere
on the displayed results in the right pane. Press Ctrl+A (select all),
press Ctrl+C (copy) and paste the results into your favorite text editor or
word processor.
