Undo "make files and folders private"
Posted by fshoff on April 4th, 2006

I have just set a password on my (Administrator's) account, and in the
process, inadvertently selected "Make files anf folders private". As a
result the share option for my user account is greyed out. How can I undo
this selection?
I run Windows XP Home on a Dell Dimension 4400 P4 machine, and am connected
to my lapotop by a LAN.

Ramesh
Thanks for the suggestion. I've tried it, but the line "Use simple file
sharing" doesn't exist in the Advanced Settings section. Any suggestions?

Ramesh,
Thanks for your response. Still no success, and I am a bit confused by
youir last suggestion.
Initially, the reference you suggested directed me to open 'My Computer' and
click on 'Tools', then the View tab, and look in the Advanced Settings
window. As I reported, I could find no "Use simple file sharing' line.
After receiving your second response, I repeated the process in Safe Mode,
but still failed to find the line. Then I notice that your second message
refers to the "Security Tab". Where was I supposed to look for that tab?

Fred,

While in Safe Mode:

Right-click the folder in question, and choose Properties.
Click the Security tab.
Click Add, and type in Administrators, click OK.
Select Administrators group that you've added now.
Put a checkmark near Full Control (Allow) in Permissions box.
Click OK.
