The word "slipstreaming" was originally used to refer to the practice
of many software manufacturers of including updates to their product
on the distribution CD without any real announcement of what they were
doing or differentiation of the various kind of CDs. It was always a
disparaging term because it was poor practice. It was used as a way
for the manufacturer not to have to print a different box, manual,
etc. for the updated version, and to sell older stock that didn't
appear to be outdated, but actually was. That saved them money, but it
left the customer unable to tell whether he was buying the new version
or the old.

Somewhere along the line, people started creating their own updated
versions of some software, by merging the update files with the
original CD. Someone got the bright idea to call it by the same name
"slipstreaming," without realizing that the name was originally used
in a disparaging way.

The term stuck. I dislike the use of the word this way, but the
original meaning has been lost, so I long ago gave up trying to fight
it. Since everybody now uses it simply to mean a version with the
upgrade incorporated in it, I reluctantly go along.

So these days a slipstreamed copy of XP simply means an installation
CD that you've made yourself that incorporates an upgrade, such as
SP3.

I suspect your predictions will come to pass. As an Accountant I would
have been chewing up the marketting people for the cost of issuing so
many free SP2 CDs. It may have been a good PR exercise but it was an
expensive one.

I don't think the marketing folks at Microsoft will have any such worries.
Here's the head of that department

Ken,

Many thanks for sharing your knowledge, again.
Seems there's always more to learn. School is never out. :-)

Take care,

That free distribution was in the fall of 2004, and was done by mail order
only. The really expensive free distribution was done in Feb 2004. It
was a security update which included SP1a and all subsequent updates
to the late fall of 2003. It was distributed by mail, and by the millions
to
be available at computer and software outlets. Places like BestBuy and
Staples had boxes of them at the checkouts. This was to address security
issues compounded by the fact that many XP users had not installed SP1
or any security updates. It was sort of like a mass innoculation.

It's a pretty safe prediction considering the fact that Microsoft is charging
around $10 for the Vista SP1 DVD here in the US. Kind of bad PR to charge for
the Vista SP1 DVD and give away an XP SP3 CD.

Ian

Nevertheless it must have been a very expensive exercise. Of course XP
Microsoft was getting a very bad press at the time over the collossal
number of security vulnerabilities built into the operating system.

Yep, for all of us. And that's great. Life would be boring if there
weren't always something new to learn.

True especially when there is reluctance by many to upgrade to Vista.

I thought sales of XP were to stop on 30 June 2008. Today I was told by
computer outlet that they thought Microsoft had changed their mind on
this. Certainly their supplier of generic OEM copies had not told them
they would be stopping supplies. Have Microsoft done another U turn?

I haven't seen anything to make me think they've reversed direction. That said,
I wouldn't be shocked if they decided to extend the availability of XP again.

Ken answered the question perfectly. If you are interested in creating a
slipstreamed XP CD with SP 3 here are a couple of resources which are
immensely valuable:

Below is a link to Paul Thurrott's website. He's been around for years, and
IIRC, he is, or was an MS MVP.

http://www.winsupersite.com/showcase...slipstream.asp

Here's a link to Autostreamer. I used this to slipstream the XP CD with SP
2 when SP 2 was released.

http://www.softpedia.com/progDownloa...oad-13918.html

BTW, I have Retail versions of XP Pro. I assume Autostreamer works with OEM
versions of XP, but I have no personal experience with slipstreaming OEM
versions.

Slipstreamed XP CDs save huge amounts of time if you have to reinstall XP,
or perform a recovery through the XP installation interface in order to boot
your PC.

It was worth every penny. I had neighbors running XP who had no idea what
SP 2 was. I was able to take that SP 2 CD to their homes and upgrade their
PCs, which had legal versions of XP on them.

Some didn't even have anti-virus programs or firewalls installed. I took
care of that for them as well.

Not true. Use the burn to disc function of your burning software. The
resulting cd autoruns when it is inserted in a drive and puts up a splash
screen on which you click to install.

I just downloaded the file again without any problems. 'Didn't use anything
other than downloaded while in Internet Explorer.

I downloaded to my hard drive.

Would you like I burn the file to a CD and mail it to you?
