- Windows Xp start up programs
- Posted by Jake on November 6th, 2005
I frequently use Abode Photshop CS2 to edit photos. I was wondering if
there was a way to some how give me the option at start up to log into
windows with no start up programs so my system resources arent tied up. I
know msconfig could help me here but how can I make say a specific account
not load up start up programs. I run Xp Pro.

Your first step is always to look in the various programs' options or
preferences. Most reputable programs will have an option to start with
Windows and you can say "no". Many of the "start with Windows" options
from third-party programs will be per user account and not global. You
just have to see. Please be cautious about what you disable; there are
processes that *should* run with Windows. You can look up things you
find running (by using msconfig) here:

If you do a lot of work with Photoshop and have 512MB or RAM or less and
find things a bit slow after you've optimized your computer, then add
another 512MB.

First, note that the term "Ssystem Resources" referred to a particular data
structure that existed in Windows 9X. One of the advantages of Windows XP is
that that structure doesn't exist, and there is nothing to get low on or run
out of.
What can be a concern with programs that start automatically is use of RAM
and CPU cylces. But don't assume that all such programs use these in such a
way as to hurt your pereformance. Soe do and some don't; it depends on the
program. So, despite what many people tell you, you should be concerned, not
with how *many* of these programs you run, but *which*
Your objective should not be to have *no* startup programs. What you should
do is determine what each program is, what its value is to you, and what the
cost in performance is of its running all the time. You can get more
information about these at http://castlecops.com/StartupList.html. If you
can't find it there, try google searches and ask about specifics here.
Once you have that information, you can make an intelligent informed
decision about what you want to keep and what you want to get rid of.
As to how to stop programs from autostarting, on each program you don't want
to start automatically, check its Options to see if it has the choice not to
start (make sure you actually choose the option not to run it, not just a
"don't show icon" option). Many can easily and best be stopped that way. If
that doesn't work, run MSCONFIG from the Start | Run line, and on the
Startup tab, uncheck the programs you don't want to start automatically.

I just went into the registry and deleted the entries I didnt want to load
up at start up. Simple. I do have a basic understanding of the win xp
registry. Thanks for your advice anyway.

Good. I'm glad it worked. I normally recommend TweakUI instead of doing the
registry edit manually (essentially it just does it for you) because it's
easier and safer, but I'm glad you had no problems with doing it yourself.
