- 1:1 DVD-9 Ripping - how?
- Posted by Rick on December 23rd, 2004
It seems that everyone is into the shrink business of compressing a DVD-9 to
a DVD-5 blank disc. However, I wish to produce a 1:1 copy of an original
DVD-9 to DVD dual-layer blank disc, but I cannot get an adequate guide as to
how (and what software) to do this. I would prefer to do some modifications
like Region-Free capability, but nothing too fancy.
I have come across utils like 1ClickDVDCopy, DVD Decrypter, IFOEdit and
TMPGEnc DVD Author etc, but there is no A-Z set of instructions available to
do the whole thing. My main concern is that I'll have to create a 8-9gb
..ISO image, but of course I am only running FAT32 which rules out anything
larger than 4gb at a time for each file.
Can someone tell me what software (or combination thereof) is best for
creating a "duplicate version" of a dual-layer DVD onto another dual-layer
recordable DVD. Many thanks.

I would use DVDDecrypter to rip in file mode from the DVD. Then use
Nero/whatever has DL support and burn the file structure (including the
VIDEO_TS folder) to my blank. It should be quite a simple process.
Bear in mind however that DL DVDs have a capacity slightly less than a
DVD-9. Fortunately, not many discs use all of the space on a DVD-9.

DVD Decryptor has NO shrinking capabilities of any kind. All it does is
remove the decryption and region settings, so that's probably your best
bet.
Just select ALL of the files on the disc and go.

Oh okay then, one more time for the hard of hearing ... how do I copy a
DVD-9 original to a DVD-9 blank disc?

The way I do it is to rip to ISO with DVDDecrypter then burn back with the
same program.
Never had a problem that way.

Rip to ISO with DVD Decryptor, then open DVD Shrink, remove uncessary audio
tracks, and that should fit with no video compression needed. As aqua b
said, DVD R media is slightly smaller than pressed..so get rid of something
to save space.
Upgrade to NTFS partition as well.

This won't work with FAT32 - the ISO will be too large. It may not be
possible for the OP to convert to NTFS without changing operating system
also. The better plan would be to use DVD Decrypter in File Mode and rip the
individual files to the hard drive. These will fit using FAT32 and the
resulting files can be burned back to disc.

Rick,
DVD Shrink 3.2.0.15 allows you to shrink or not. There's even a setting
that allows you to select whether the ripped movie will ultimately be
recorded on a DVD-5 disk or a DVD-9 disk. Selecting DVD-9 essentially means
that you will not compress.
In addition, DVD Shrink allows you the option to create an ISO image file.
It is my understanding (others, please correct me if I'm wrong) that it is
best to use an ISO image file since that will preserve the layer transition
in the proper place when you record the ISO image file to the DVD-9 disk.
On a somewhat unrelated note - I was thinking of building a computer with a
massive data store (1 or 2 TB) and a superb video card, perhaps a top of the
line ATI All-in-Wonder card. I could then used DVD Shrink without
compression and transfer between 120 to 240 movies to the system. I would
keep this computer in my living room and play my movies from it.

Yep, I'm halfway through with you on that one. I have indeed done the "file
copy" option of DVD Decrypter and have all the files separately stored onto
HD, however, the problem remains as to how these files are to be burnt to a
DVD-9 blank disc. I cannot see how I can create a working DVD-9R/W of these
files without the need to build a new .ISO image of them (without developing
a new NTFS partition).
What piece of software would enable me to just take these .vob's and .ifo's
etc and burn a DVD-9 disc? Can NeroDVD or TMPGEnc Author or similar do this
sort of thing without the need to re-create a whole .iso of the initial
decrypted files?

Nero and TMPGEnc Author should both be able to write to DVD-9 blanks
provided of course your writer is capable of using them. You don't need to
use an ISO file for this. In Nero create a new DVD Compilation. In Author
address the folder containing the files in the write module.

Samuel L Jackson once said quite thoughtfully that "When you make an
assumption, you make an ass out of u and umption". To that end, I've
managed to make a rather big bum of myself here. I am always on the lookout
for new software to do new things, but the fact that the program entitled
"DVD Shrink" always gave me the impression that all it did was "shrink
DVDs", then I never gave it a first look let alone a second one.
In any case, I finally decided to grab a copy of DVD Shrink on the
suggestion of the guy above, thanks for that. Had I known it was probably
the one program I've been looking for to create a 1:1 DVD copy off-the-bat
then I would have started off with this instead of ending with it. All I
have to do now is try and create a new NTFS partition and generate an 8-9gb
..iso out of all this.
btw, I found it quite amusing to look at the "About" window of the program
where it says that "If you were charged for this (free) software, please
report the violation to the Internet Fraud Complaint Centre". Quite the
irony I'm sure you'd agree considering the not-so-honest use of the software
by some peoples
.
er btw, what is the best DVD2DIVX program around?

DVDDecrypter, mode--iso--read , then mode-iso--write. Its an absolute
no-brainer.

I see now you are still using FAT32. Whatever floats your boat. Rip using
DVDDecrypter IFO mode, all files, then burn the result with Nero. Again its
a no-brainer. What is the problem you are having, besides wasting money on
DL media which is almost as much as a second copy of a movie.

In addition DVDDecryptor can still rip to FAT32. It just splits the image
up into sperate big files.
I wasnt aware DVD Decryptor had DL write support but thats the FIRST thing
I would have tried before posting. iso-read then iso-write.

Partly, but not quite correct: DVDs need to have the files burned in the
correct order (known as reallocation); IFO files first, then the VOBs. Plain
ordinary Nero can do this for you with the DVD-Video project.

Not sure but I thought I'd read that if you have a DL burner installed I
think dvdshrink can create its output files for a dl size disc. Obviously
shrink wouldnt need to do any compression but it would also give you options
of removing RP and such. Since Shrink is free it sure wouldn't hurt to give
it a look at least. Can check and ask in the forums here
http://www.dvdshrink.info/index.php to get better info than mine.
Hope it helps ya
